To give more chance of retrieving snagged jerkbaits and other large treble-hooked lures on heavy tackle, using split rings which are breaking strain rated, and below the strength of your braid, will allow the split rings to open before line breakage, losing a hook instead of an expensive lure. If you`re using say, 80lb braid on a heavy setup, by fitting 65lb split rings to the lures, nine times out of ten you`ll get the lure back with a firm steady pull, without risking losing a treble to a fish.
Be sensible though, and use split rings of a breaking strain *just* low enough to enable you to open them without breaking the line. Too weak and you`ll risk leaving a hook in a fish.
