  • Freshwater Predator Hunt 16/3/13

Phil and I decided to go on a Freshwater species hunt this morning hope fully in the search of some Perch or Pike and with the option of some Trout. We had a few local venues in mind and head off to the first at 8am.

Pretty grey morning when we got there only to find we weren't allowed to use our spinners or barbed hooks! We were allowed to Fly Fish though, and with that being the only 'lure' option we decided to give it a crack. I had never held a Fly Rod before let alone Fly Fished. So with a bit apprehension and coaching it wasn't long before I was flicking the Fly out enough to give it a proper go. I found it quite difficult at first, but then slowly started to get a rhythm. From then on I was really enjoying it. I wasn't successful with the technique on all my casts, but ok for he first time I thought.

It wasn't long before Phil was into the Fish, he managed to bag the first Fish! I'm sure he'll be posting his catch report so I won't spoil it.

Shortly after, just when I thought it wouldn't be my day, slowly twitching the fly back, I felt the subtle tug of a Fish, with a grin like a Cheshire Cat I brought in a lovely little Rainbow Trout.

After an hour half or so and Phil thrashing me 4-1 on the fish count we decided to go and find some Perch elsewhere. After a short drive we reached the mark with high hopes. We used a variety of lures, spinners an SP's only to draw a blank.

On the plus side I got to try my new Ecogear VX vibration baits....

Was well impressed with their action and at only 4g they cast an absolute mile.

All in all not a bad morning, learnt loads about Freshwater fishing that I didn't know yesterday and bagged my first Trout first time fly fishing so well happy!
    Regards

here's a couple of mine, i only took pictures of 2 of them as i wanted to get them back in the water asap.

I hadn't cast a fly since i was about 12 (22 years ago) but after a quick bit of instruction it came rushing back and as Si aid i managed 4 fish. It was nice to do a bit of fresh water for a change and between casts i was 'think of how i can justify spending more money on fishing gear' :~ maybe i'll leave it a few weeks lol. Might have to pop back again in a few weeks and give it another go.

Failed on the Perch and Pike Front, i might have to do a bit more reading up.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!
