  • Fan 'dabby' dozy.... 27/2/13

I was sitting in the office today looking out of the window at the lovely sunshine and thinking that I wouldn't mind an hour down the river after work. I was thinking that tommy Coddling or Dabs might be on the menu.

I got down just after high water when the tide was beginning to flow again. Decided to experiment a bit and try fishing a Carolina rig, just letting the tide roll the lure down down stream with he hope of it rolling over a Dabs head!

I opted for a 1-1/2 oz weight, size 4 Hook and a large Pink Isome.

Casting upstream, just letting it settle on the bottom and let the tide gently roll it down river, repeating this over and over again varying distances. In this case about 30-70yrds.

After a while I got the rattle of a take, then again. Fish on.... Reeled into a lovely little Dab. :-)

One more for the Lure Challenge!

A few casts later I had another bite and take, reeled in only for the fish to drop off as I lifted out of the water! Looked like a Flounder, but I could have been mistaken.

I have found that little or no added action has proved more successful in the winter months so far, I suppose it's because the Fish are a lot less energetic and can't be arsed to chase potential prey.

Anyway chuffed with the Dab as that's my first one on a Lure.
    Regards
    Si

Yes mate small offset hook, problem with smaller hooks though is that they (flatties) take them right down, and because it was an offset hook it didn't have a straight shank to get a decent grip. So the poor little fella went back plus one hook.

There was a thread on here a while ago about retreiving hooks from deep hooked flatties by going in through the back of the gills. Once you get your head round the idea, it works a treat.

PS I'm guessing that it's not an A4 catch card.

Cheers for that mate, I'll look into it. Always feel guilty leaving a hook in! No definitely not an A4 card mate, that would be a monster Dab!
