Instead of our annual Mull of Galloway this year Nathan, Carl, Siggsy and myself decided to head to pastures new and give north Wales a try. Nathan had reccied the area over the past few months and got to know a couple of marksnthat would fish in different conditions to give us the best chance of getting some good bags of fish.
We headed down on Friday afternoon, and got to the campsites for about half 8, put the tents up and headed straight out for a few hours fishing while we still had some light. We were into Pollock straight away, falling think and fast to the trusty old Zens and a few on soft plastics as well, nothing of any great size the biggest was probably no bigger than a pound but good sport after a long drive. As the light faded we headed back to the tents for curry, drinks and talk of tactics for the following days fishing. The weather conditions weren't going to be favourable, strong winds and increasing swells were going to make fishing some areas difficult.
We got up bright and early Saturday Morning and headed back to the same mark we had fishing the night before for some pre breakfast fishing. We were soon into Pollock and my first wrasse of the trip, taken on a Spro Red and black split tail
Again it wasn't a big fish, but as ever with wrasse it gave a good account of itself.
We headed back for some breakfast at about 10, and readied ourselves for the afternoon ahead. Our chosen mark for the afternoon was a short drive from the campsites, then a long but not too arduous walk. Again we were into fish from the off, a better stamp of fish this time, and a lot more wrasse. Pollock of 1-2 pound were abundant, with quite a few bigger fish thrown in the biggest probably 3-5lb. The fish seemed to be taking everything we chucked at them, from Zens to Soft Plastics to ragworm under a float.
Siggsy with a Nice Pollock.
A Bonnie Wrasse on the float.
A female Cookoo Wrasse on the Spro again.
Fishing lures slow and deep seemed to be the best way to fish, lifting the lure and letting it bounce of the bottom, sit for a second and repeat. We move mark slightly, about a minute from where we had set up and the fishing went off the chart, pretty much a fish a chuck for the next hour or so. Again fishing deep and slow, unexpectedly the wrasse were hammering the 28g Zeniths, the greater casting distance was putting me on the fish and although Nathan and Carl were still getting there fair share of good wrasse the trusty Zen just kept pulling them in, including this little beauty.
Weighing in at about 5lb, there was some tense moments as the fish dove and shook its head in a vane effort to get away and then it had to be lifted the last few foot.
We headed back, via the local pub for a bbq and a few drinks.
We decided not to fish Sunday as the forecast was getting worse, so we packed up and headed up north.
All in all it was a belting weekend with some cracking fishing. Hopefully the lads will tag some more photos on to this post.
