  • Trout and Salmon Fishing - River Wear

Heres on for the fresh water lads, I'm going to get my rod license for migratory species' and as the Wear is a good sea trout river, how far up the river can you fish without a permit, in guessing it would be to the point where the river is no longer tidal can anyone confirm this.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!

You need a license to fish for Salmon and Seatrout up to 6 mile out to sea.
As for Brown trout in the tidal waters, you still need a license.
No clubs own the tidal water up to Cox green. The first club waters belong to Harrington fishing club.
I fish quite a lot on the tidal stretch but only when the river has been low for at least a week, this gives the fish numbers time to build up while waiting for water. The last 2 hours of the ebb on a medium sized tide being the best time.
Pointless fishing there till at least May when the first of the Seatrout start entering the river.

Cheers mate, I'm definitely getting a license, ive looked at some day ticket prices and they don't seem to bad. I'm lead to believe there's a couple of free stretches in Durham as well.

posted on this site last year, one member had a significant number of good salmon (some catches videoed) all on the free stretch just down from durham centre. be aware, a lot of time is required to catch any fish that does not feed! but enjoy yourself - by the way he was fishing the fly.
