Thought i would put some marks up where ive either caught or seen reliable reports of different species being caught, please feel free to add any you like
Well I'll start with the most controversial
Bass- Quite a few of the marks i fish for bass have been give to me by other people so i wont put them up, but they can be caught all along our coast and are often caught over the summer months between south shields and rocker.One mark I did find for myself is at Cambois, low tide. I have had a few bass from there all on surface lure it can be a bit difficult on a big low with kelp showing on the surface.
Coley- These most be the most commonly caught fish on lures around here, with the possible exception of mackerel, they show up at every mark my favourite "early season" mark for them is Shields pier, high tide, casting at the pout the river water meets the sea, you can normally see a distinct difference in colour between the two.
Pollock- I have read reports of these being caught again all around our coast the hot spots seem to be the local piers but my favourite place to fish for them is Dunstinbough Castle. Try castling along cliffs, or pier instead of casting straight out to sea.
Wrasse- I have heard of these being caught around the rocks at whitburn, and have seen the caught at Shields pier, again fishing close in to the structure. I had my first wrasse, all be it a small one of the rocks at Beadnell.
Dragonet- Ive never caught one of these but that is something i hope to change this year, there is caught every year locally again from the piers, normally by people fishing for mackerel, but i think if we take the time to target them they will be there.
Flounder, Dab & Place- River marks for these, and most flat fish, but there plentiful on the beaches as well, Marsden beach, in front of the grotto is a good little shot. Fish close in and let the tide move your lure around.
Mackerel- Well we all know the piers will be chocker with "Macky Bashers) all summer, and that's normally my queue to stay away opting instead for Dunstinbourgh or the rock marks along the leas you'll be surprised at how close these fish come in, ive even had them on a spinner of shields beach.
Gurnard- Again afew of these turn up now and again normally by people fishing for mackerel but as with the dragonet is we target them i think they will be there, the only places ive heard of them being caught is off the peirs.
Sea Scorpions'- Any rock mark will through these up or along the edge of the pier.
Weaver- Careful with these little bliters the can sting!! But treat with respect there's no need to fear or hurt them. I normally unhook them with a pair of pliers with out even touching them. And there a bonny little fish with there Spikey punk poker fin. Ive had loads of these of Graham sand when fishing for Launce and they happily take a 28g spinner as big as them.
Launce- Its pretty much inevitable that you'll get these when you get mackerel so any of the mackerel marks should produce them
Blenny- Personally ive only had these fish from rock pools, Torness is swarming, but you'll get them in any decent rock pool more locally.
Whiting- Again these fish are abundant around here so any mark you get them on bait should produce them on a lure. I would probably try the Rat house for these or once again the piers.
Herring- These fish also turn up along with the mackerel. To be honest i normally change tactics one i hit the mackerel to avoid catching to many, i think I'll change that this year and try for a Herring.
Scad- Same as above, but remember these fish are protected.
Lump Sucker- I've seen loads of these washed up on the beaches, and a few lads on here have had them on bait, there was one taken off roker pier on a lure last year.
Sea Trout- Being that i don't have a migratory fish license i wont be fishing for these, but if i was to have one id fish the rocks along the leas. I saw loads of these jumping out the water last year, but never accidentally hooked one yet. There've also been taken on shields pier.
Mullet- Sorry i don't know any marks for these, rumour has it they've been seen around the rocks between craster and dunstinbough castle.
Turbot- Never heard anyone locally having these on lures but there's a few caught on bait around Cambois and duridge bay
