I fished Shaprley last night with my mate Brian Corkhill.
    Started approx 18:15,

The places was packed, there was only 2 spaces on the doxford lake available. There was the odd fish getting caught and I started with a unweighted size 14 hares ear. Second cast, I hooked a fish, lost it soon afterwards. I had the odd pull that resulted in nothing over the next couple of hours. By this time the NE wind had got up and the sun had dipped therefore the temperature dropped! like wise so did the fish!

By this time anglers started to go home therefore there was a little space to roam, I moved up to the top of the doxford (near the lodge) and got 1 straight away on a size 16 black beatle. Brian managed a nice brown approx 2lb on a size 18 CDC black buzzer. I switched to the same fly and got 1 further fish approx 3-1/2lb soon followed by 1 more for Brian.... We had a number of fish turn at the fly but as the night went on the fish lost interest.

Overall alittle disappointing, a combination of too many anglers, bright sun light and NE wind did nothing to help us... however, it was still pleasent to be out!

    Finished approx 21:30
    Brian 2 fish
    James 2 fish

    Cheers

I was there last night too. Saw the crowds on the upper lakes and decided to fish the old lakes. Had fish steadily on nymphs fished on 20ft leader whilst those around struggled fishing the usual dawsons etc. Also had fish on a di3 counted down to 10 roly poly retrieve with orange blobs. Then as it got dusky around 9.30 and the fog started rolling in i put the bung on and had a fish a cast. Must of had at least a dozen in the space of around 20 mins.

          Hi Miller
I think there is skill in what ever fly you fish with whether it\'s a blob, a dry or a buzzer.

To cast a fly line is a skill, to find the fish is a skill and to find the right depth & retrieve is a skill!

The blob is a lure, no more and no less, do I use it.... normally no, have I used it, yes, it has saved me some blank days in the depth of winter!

Personally I think that on a summers evening when fish are rising and buzzers are hatching I would always wish to fish with an immative pattern, however its everyone to there own!

The roly poly is a retrieve that is used mainly with lures - also known as the hand over hand retreive (last witnessed, in Poole - Dorset, by Sless when dancing to nightfeaver)......

This retrieve brings the fly through the water like a torpedo and the trout love it.... when they can be arsed to follow it!

          I hope thie helps

          Cheers
