  • wading about in rivers

If you\'re fishing a river blind and trying to cover more water do you wade upstream or down to a new spot (or do you get out and walk along the bank before re-entering). I guessed downstream but need to phone a friend.

    TIA

My friend hasn\'t got a scoob, he lives in Dhofar and only eats fish on Blundays (There\'s no such day as Blunday where he comes from so he doesn\'t eat fish, he lives on sloppy eggs and scallop corals) anyone know or should I visit one of them non sea angling sites.

I bet mark would know he\'s great.

If its a small clear river or stream would advise you to always wade upstream. On a larger river wade downsteam when using the wetfly. Upstream for nymphing, dry fly and worming.

      Hope this helps

I\'d like to add that if it\'s a large river and you don\'t know it well, get out and walk the back to get to a new fishing spot. Same could apply to a few smaller rivers as well.
It doesn\'t matter if it\'s one of those rivers with an even gravel bottom, but on some of the others you can wade - upstream or down - and pick your way carerfully to a new spot, then find it\'s too deep to go any further, and then not be able either to get out or find your route back to where you started without getting a soaking - or worse.
I\'ve floated down a couple of rivers that way, and watched a bloke on the Annan wade down one section at thigh depth, then vanish with only his hat showing after he walked off the ledge he was on.
        Cheers

              Y. Truly I tried to get a hold of a snowbee one before I left, ÂŁ20 ish and good apparently. I\'ve seen others for silly money and all they are really is a stick weighted at one end . Definetly essential in anything other than knee deep in a strange river I have realised. The lad in Pitlochry didn\'t have any and when I asked his advice he said -

\"If you can\'t see the bottom don\'t stand on it\"
              and
\"If your nuts are getting cold you\'re in too deep\"

A potentailly very dangerous pastime this wading business if done incorrectly.

if its for grayling charlie a small tip ? wade carefully across if possible at the top of the pool you are going to fish then start at the bottom of the pool and work your way up the previous wading would have disturbed the bottom and created a food sorce in the water for the graylings and they love a fresh scent if for brownies my preference is upstream as you can target your fish without spooking them either with dries or duo style ! good hunting

My mates dad\'s mate was called \"Bummer Herdman\" cos he used to bum up all his casts and send the trout downstream. He didn\'t have a stick and fell in and we pulled hiim out by his wader straps. That was a long time ago and \"Bummer\" is a long time deed but the trout are happy now and life goes on.

                            wade carefully
                            I can\'t even walk carefully.

Bummer Herdman always used to say:

\"every branch of every tree is your bloody enemy\"

He was ok really but we were kids and he was a adult and we were f***** sick of saving his life all the time.
