  • Boobies

See............... us gentlemen anglers don\'t snigger at such comments, we sit up straight in our chairs and share the wisdom.

What\'s a Boobie(?) in trout talk. I\'ve fished a limited amount of water (all still) so am no expert but one particular place said \"NO BOOBIES\"! The place I have been fishing recently has restrictions on ground baiting for trout, hand grenades and pair trawling the water etc. but doesn\'t go into further detail on what\'s what and what\'s not! I fished this evening and was getting no interest at all, tried all sorts (all on floating line which may have been my downfall?) The daughters voice sailed gracefully across the still waters ....\"DAD WHEN YOU PACKING IN\" I whispered back in a gentleman angler\'s tone \"IN A BIT, NOW SHUT UP YOU LEMON, EVERY TITHEAD IN WEARDALE JUST HEARD THAT\" Then I went quiet as my words rebounded off of the hillside and tipped me flask over.

Anyway, last chance saloon I stuck on one of these dry flies I\'ve got with polystrene balls attached and every cast a fish had a pop or leapt onto my barbless hook. Are those Boobies ? 3 fish in 9 mins. Doesn\'t seem fair.

Me tweeds got drenched as well, I saw this Grebe type bird go under, it hadn\'t come up for a while so I dived in to help it back to life. It popped up about 30 yards away from me and was laughing as it surfaced. *******

boobys are what allan says and the reason they are banned on a lot of waters is if you fish them on a sinking line the line sinks takeing the booby down and it floats off the bottom and when the fish are hooked they always tend to be deeply hooked so no chance of release thats what ive been told anyway.

IF you are caught fishing them on some waters you can be sine died.As has been posted they are used like buzzers underwater, just stay there and bob up and down, and fish take them deep,so there is no chance of returning them..They are banned on nearly all the waters I fish.

aye, flashy glitzy things with polystyrene balls on em. a single split shot on the leader allows you to very accurately set the depth of the bottom you are fishing. the split shot hits the bottom and the booby will float as high as the free line after the shot will allow. you do tend to get deep hooked fish, but if they are for the pot, whats the big deal. There is one theory thst the round polystyren balls resemble the crap that stockie fish are fed on in the breeding ponds, which they are used to just taking down in one so they see them as an easy meal. A theory that holds out if you try them in some of the scottish lochs or even cow green where there is nowt but wild fish, boobies are no better than anything else you can chuck at em, in fact I beleive natural immitative patterns give you the edge on wild fish

not a fan myself, much prefer traditional stuff

where abouts in weardale are you?? ordo I know the answer to that already!!

You know the Weardale score mark! Thanks lads for the info, as I said there is no expicit mention of them in me members single sided a4 photocopy. As I mentioned before as well it was the last fly I tried as they look a bit whack, as do cat\'s whisckers IMHO. just the fish went nuttso over it. The water I\'m fishing at the minute encourages nee demands catch and release and that.

I\'m related to Ell through drink.

Tat what\'s \"sine died\" sounds very very bad!

I was fishing a dry version I think ...A daddy pattern with all the moula and a couple of big white knackers on it\'s heed. It floated and as I retrieved would dip down and pop up, it was sinking no more than a couple or three inches ($4.50) These things are obviously not just sinking fish harmers as every take I had was your average (says he!!) canny snatch on a tensioned line.

If you really want to get banned, forget boobies, what you need is some small minnows, rigged with 2 small trebles (dead or alive - the fish not the hooks) and have a bash with them

double deadly and considered more than a mere faux pas

works a treat at cow green for the big uns, mind you so do 6 daylights with a 30g spinner on the end (Who?? Me?? Perish the thought)

you need to be gentle with your casting as they can get a bit shredded on the back cast otherwise!

As well as fishing with boobies its also considered bad form to dip your nob in the water out of season

Is that just to check how deep it is?

nah, that would be silly, its to check the water temperature
