  • First Trip

I got the 08.47 train from Sunderland to begin my journey to have a weeks fishing with Les.
I arrived at sunny S****horpe at 11.48.I had to wait a while for les as he had an appointment to keep, a half hour or so.
We put my bags into the car and headed off to the tackle shop for bits and bobs of tackle. I got myself a new margin pole, already elasticated and i even got two free rigs thrown into threw deal.
We then left for Les's. When we arrived we had a hot cuppa and had a chat about what was going on in the world.LoL

We decided to visit a new venue that was brought into the club portfolio of waters, http://www.grangeparkfisheries.co.uk/ , an excellently ran place with great amenities.

We bought some feeder pellets and hooker pellets from the onsite shop. We chose our pegs and got down to fishing at around 2.30pm.

I threw some feeder pellets next to the lillies while i was setting my margin pole up. Almost in an instance there were swirls around the lillies. I then threw some soft hook pellets into the feeding area. Again, swirling. Great i thought, at least the fish seems hungry. I was not to be disappointed , on my very first put in i got a rather nice crusian carp. Les was not far behind in landing his first fish. We continued to fish until 5pm, we packed up and headed fr home, happy with the few hours we had, and certainly the fish we caught.

Arriving home we had a cuppa and a chat, Les announced, " are we off the the club then " *with my arm half way up my back i agreed, * .

    Thursday.

We had been intently listening to the weather forecast, wind and rain, heavy at that, was announced on the TV. We decided to visit once again Grange Park.
Again we both fished the pole, and what a day. It was fish after fish all day. Again on soft hooker pellets over micro feeder pellets, Koi carp, skimmers, tench, baby tench, golden tench, fantails, common carp , mirror carp, It was estimated we had around 500 fish out that day.
Wew chatted with the owner of the venue prior to have our breakfast. Great bloke and a very caring fishery owner. Breakfast was £5, two sausage, two bacon, two eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes. tea or coffee and two slices of toast, ahhh very nice.

The sky grew darker and darker every minute, at one point Les looked and i said *" did you feel that " yes, a drop of rain. The sky became even darker. Come on lets get away before the heavens open up. We got packed up at around 2pm. On the short 15 minute drive back to Les's house the rain started.
When we got home, the heavens were opening up, very loud thunder claps which seemed to be right above us, lightening and very, very, very heavy rain.
We sat in the car waiting for the deluge to ease, LoL.. After about 20 we were still waiting, i was the bravest and made the dash to the front door.
    Another great day fishing.

    Friday.

Yet again more heavy rain was forecast for mid morning.
With Grange park being so close and immediate parking behind the pegs we went there again. Margin fishing again, again in the lillies. And what a day. The fishing was little harder, the weather, well what can i say. ! How wrong could the weather forecasters be. Glorious sunshine all day, lovely sunbathing weather, with a slight breeze.
Maybe that's why the fish were not so active, but whereas in the margins away from us, big carp were splashing about, in the middle of the water, carp were breaching and splashing about. One angler did land a very nice ghost carp, Maybe 10 pound or so. We packed up at around 5pm. Yes Les, we will go to the club again, LoL.

    Saturday and Sunday.

We did not fish. On Saturday we had a jaunt to a couple of tackle shops to see if we could get a bargain, we both wanted a side try, No chance. We then went onto tackle shop, still no joy.
On Sunday Les had a pre organised car boot sale, again another warm day, forecasters got it completely wrong yet again. The car boot sale was on the Appleby Recreation field. Vintage cars, falconry, dog shows, kids game, OF ALL AGES, took lace. The falconry show was the attraction i was waiting for. An excellent show, Peregrine Falcons, Eagle Owls, Barn owls, and other species were on show.
After the show we were invited back to Les's sisters for a BBQ, very kind and very nice. Three burgers and three sausages later i was happy. We chatted for a while, exchanging jokes and generally having a good time. An early night that night, being up at 4.30am, must be mad to get up at that time and not to go fishing,

Some of the birds of prey.

    Monday

The weather was terrible, or so we were led to believe, AGAIN, the bloody forecast was wrong. But not to worry, no plans were made. We had a trip to Grimsby,We looked into a tackle shop that Les has telephoned to see if they had any side trays. We popped in and they let us down, not to worry, £14.99 saved. We had a very nice luncheon, a carvery. Beef and gammon with a rather large pile of veggies on my plate. Full to the brim. We arrived home and guess what, Les said, come on, its cards night in the club, i was his guest so i could not refuse. 4 or 5 pints later we headed home.

    Tuesday.
    My last day.
We had hope that we could have headed for the river during my stay, but because of the weather it was a no go. We did visit Kneadby drains, and had first hand news about the state of the river, the intended place we had planned was at least 4 FOOT UP and it was raging through. The other place we had thought of, wind tunnel, ! not nice.
So yet again we decided to visit Grange Park.

Another good day with a very nice full English.
More fish today, not as good as Thursday. But again a very good variety of fish came to the feed. I fished the feeder today, fishing in the middle . Groundbait feeder with a mixture of maggots and sweetcorn added. Maggot was used as hookbait. Carp, Koi carp, skimmers and tench were the main catch of the day. I did land my best fish of the trip today, a nice carp of about 3 pounds. Les stuck to the margins again. He was also successful in landing good fish.

We decided to call it a day and get packed away at 4pm. We chatted with a nice young lady who had a horse in the adjoining field. The white mare turned out to be Polish. ( the horse not the lady, LoL ) After about an half hour we left. When we got back the car was emptied and tidied up. I packed my travel back ready for my trip home on Wednesday. My train home was at 09.19am from S****horpe. My bags in the car, and away we went to the train station, i thanked Les for his hospitality yet again, then i boarded the train homeward bound.

Fish images now, some of the fish i caught.

    Thanks for reading.

Looks like you had a great time, met some like minded people, caught some nice fish and had some great breakfasts. Great report and pictures too.

This year had probably been the worst I can think of weather wise. But as you've shown it's still great to get out fishing, you just don't know what's going to turn up. You just make your booking and go.Well done.

        Thanks mate.
The best laid plans do go astray, LoL.
The plan was to fish the River Idle on opening day, then onto the River Trent at Newark/Nottingham for the barbel, but as i said the river was up 4 foot and raging thru, we were told that on another tidal stretch of the River Trent, 4oz grippers were useless, ! ! ! !
