  • Looking to start course fishing

    Hi folks.
I'm looking to try my hand at course fishing, mainly silver fish but I'm clueless as the what gear to use and basically what to do I know fishing on the float is part of fishing for silver fish but that's it! The gear is want to buy is stuff that won't break the bank... any advice etc will be very welcome

you can get the gear proper cheap, id just go into your local shop and ask for an all round rod n reel kit, i used to use a quivver tip rod with three different stiffness tips so i could use it for anything really . meant for bottom fishing but used it for everything. wont be more than 50 quid for a decent rod n reel combo. dont get sucked into paying big money. you cant really go wrong with shakespeare rods. cheap and good quality

Try looking around there's always decent bargins kicking around, both on here and in the local tackle dealers.

            Hi,
if you have a local club suggest you join, you can get a lot of advice, and access to some good gear as there is always somebody selling something.
If I was to recomend anything, it would be to go for better second hand gear, rather than cheap new, some of which can be down right ropey

What gear to get depends on where your going to fish, ponds, lakes, rivers etc.
            Ponds, lakes, slow rivers:
            1. 13' waggler rod,( Very versatile can be used to fish most waters, comes into its own in warmer weather.).( Team Daiwa, Daiwa Connoisseur, Shimano, Tricast.).
            2. Light / Medium, Multitip Feeder rod,( 10' to 11' ), Can be used all year, and will catch in winter when the waggler gear will struggle.( Old Daiwa Connoisseur,( 10' best medium feeder on planet), Shimano Twinpower.( Best wand I have used).
            3. Stick float rod 13', moving river set up, possibly the most skillfull, an artform when done right, can be fished all year round, but comes into its own in Autumn/ colder months when dace shoal up.

Reels don't need to be too big, for silver fish use 2.5/3lb bs on waggler set up, 4lb bs on feeder.( Try and stay away from ultra fast retrieve, they can spin the line up).

This, in my opinion, will get you a start and cover the basics in silver fish fishing, and by the time you have bought all the floats, feeders, nets, rod rests, etc. you will have shelled out quite a bit.
If you get bitten, Poles, and a multitude of other gear will be NEEDED followed by marraige councelling.
Thing is, go somwhere your going to catch, commercial puddles can be entertaining whilst you perfect your game.

If you need any help / advice PM me.
            Good luck !!

            Mel....
