Got up to Kielder for 10.30am got our permit to fish the burns and streams and set off to our favourite starting point. My mate cast out first, perfect start 5 seconds and his float shot under, game on 3 minutes later a healthy brownie weighing 1lb 9 ozs was carefully landed, weighed and returned. My turn, cast into the same spot float trotted down about 10 feet and then shot under, result! another brownie 1lb 5ozs again carefully returned. We moved slowly down the river fishing all of the usual pools and runs. By the end of that stretch Stu had landed 6 and lost one and I had 5 landed (all carefully returned - best fish from the stretch were the first ones landed.)
Moved upstream to the top stretch and fished there for an hour I had a couple more from there and Stu had 1. Finally moved down to the Lewisburn for the last couple of hours, conditions were perfect but the fish were being picky, ended up coaxing 1 about 8 inches out on my final cast.
Brilliant day to be out in such a beautiful part of the countryside and the fish were a bonus.
We used worms trotted freeline and on a 1" bubble float and a variety of dry and wet traditional flies with floating line. Best flies were a red tag black, spent olive and olive nymphs. (don't take your best fly rod though - rocks are slippery and the trees can be a real pain at times)
Anybody interested can pick up a permit from the castle for a day (including a map) for £7.50.
