  • Sweethope Lough

Fished here a fair bit over the last three years, but never seem to have any success in the centre of the Great Lough. Is this the same for others, or am I missing something?

I normally try to fish near the margins and find more action there than mid lake, mini lures seem to be more effective with the yellow dancer the best of the bunch.

There's a deep channel runs roughly north/south about 30 yards out from the car park always seems to hold a few fish , I think it's the route of the stream that was flooded to make the lake. The southern edge of the lough , where most of the bank anglers fish from , is also a good bet , right up to the end of what used to be the woodland.
If you are thinking about fishing there in March you might struggle on the big lough , it's always difficult the first few weeks of the season , opening week can be good on the little lough , fish the dam end either in front of the garage or the other end of the dam wall , if you can't get on there , fish from the bank north of the exit stream , there are always fish in those areas.
Intermediate or slow sinking lines and drag a black lure along the bottom till the water warms up a bit , then have a go with the buzzers

start of season small lake is much better as it is usually 4or5 degrees higher so fish more active. as weather warms the big lake fishes best if you cast towards the banks from the boat. a lot of fish are caught from the shore proving that the fish are in the margins. lures to start the season with are cats whisker, yellow dancer, green and black nomad orange fritz. hope this helps. good luck.

Thanks. I've never managedto blank, but want to beat the repetitive 'lowscores', when I see others catching plenty. I'm not someone who has to catch the maximum numbers of fish every time, but when you see others catching and you cannot work out where you are going wrong, it's time to ask for help!!

See you on the water in the coming season.

It does fish early season and then tends to die off later in the year. The bay/bank just outside and right of the boat launch can be very productive.

We usually motor up to the left hand side of the island, stick the drogue out and drift back down or across keeping an eye out for fish moving on the surface. Lures early season and wets later on usually do the trick. Bibio is a very good pattern for later in the year.

I've had some of my best days fishing ever on Sweethope over the years but it can be rock hard if the conditions are wrong.
