Its interesting to hear all the different stories about salmon fishing.People who think the only way you should catch them is on the fly and others who think using Shrimp should be banned. Most of my fishing has been for Sea trout on a night but after getting my one and only Salmon on a copper toby I will be trying all the other methods next season...... I have no shame. I did buy my first double handed fly rod this year and I will be giving it a go if I can get the hang of it.
The worst thing I found this year was people telling me I should have put my salmon back because it was a hen fish. I would be surprised if anyone put their first Salmon back but I do return most of my seatrout unless I have a bad year like this year.
I know what your saying about the mouths being soft they were moving through the rivers at speed this year but still enjoyed the fishing and I did have some very nice Brown trout on a night that I thought were Sea trout.
All nice fish lads never heard of the tartan coat before. LOL

Theres nowt better than flee fishing for salmon with the double hander, its what its all about for me.But!,if you want to catch fish you match the conditions and if that means prawns/flying c's/tobys/devons,then whatever, make the most of it.Its fishing not casting
On the hen fish issue, our club rules state that they are put back in october, its fair enough, the old girls are normally on the black side by then and ready to do what they came up the river for
No black or tartan fish should be taken, its against the law for one thing but if you get a nice bright hen fish in say august and you want one for the pot, knock it on the heed and enjoy!
I had my best season for a long time this year on the Wear, both tidal and fresh.
Only Seatrout to 7lb on the tidal stretch on the spinner( The Salmon don,t want to know on the tidal stretch),put some hours and walking in mind.
In the fresh i have had loads of Seatrout to 11lb on this.
In September and October i had 22 Salmon to 18lb on the spinner and the prawn.
Two on the prawn, both 12lb.
A 15lb hen on the above spinner.
My last session with the prawn at Durham i had 5 fish for 36lb and lost 2 off.The river had dropped to 10 inches above summer level and was gin clear.
They all had sealice on them.Great sport on a 1-1/2lb barbel rod with 20lb braid. The Grilse were very late running this year. These are now in the freezer to be eaten over the winter.
If anyone fancies a decent day fishing for wild Brownies with light gear try Kielder castle.
They do a day ticket for £7.50 which allows you to fish the rivers and burns that feed Kielder reservoir - It's a cracking days sport with brownies up to 1 and half pounds, and the occasional Rainbow turns up from the lake.
Been fishing it for years and never ever caught less than 8 decent pound plus fish in a half day's fishing. Personal best on the fly from the kielder burn was last year - 1lb 9ozs - safely returned.
Preferred tackle and tactics.
7 or 8 ft fly rod floating line 4lb tippet - various natural nymphs and wet flies - summer - dry fly patterns (may, hawthorn, black gnat etc)
5 or 6 foot light action spinning rod 8lb main line 3lb tippet - small quiver/clear bubble float or free line with a 16 hook for worms or brandling - using the current to pull it through pools.
I love fishing light stuff and it never fails to put a smile on my face

This sounds great. Its a while since I had the 4wt oot.Been looking for some decent brownie fishing, the Tyne has been crap for a long time, although there are still some good fish on the South.
Have you any details of where to obtain the tickets please mate?
cheers
Tone
Yes it is mate, then its coated with metalic gold nail varnish.
It works best cast upstream a retrieved quite fast.
Interesting spinner sandworm
Do you use raps very often,I've been told they do very well on the Wear? The orange X-raps were lethal on the Tyne last season, bit dear at a tenner a shot mind!
Looks like it will be Kielder castle for me next year Could do with details of where to purchase please.
Everyone seems to be using X-raps these days but they are a bit steep at a tenner each. Some lads swear by them but others have said if they are takin they will have ago at anything. I saw a lad with four seatrout on the bank this year and he was using one, while others had only had single fish.

I don,t bother with plugs on the river, talked to a few lads that use Fire tiger patterns and they have had fish with them.
They seem to lose a lot of fish with them though.
I,l stick with the tried and trusted for now.
