  • Caistron, rekindling the passion

Picked the fly rod up again, first time for 3 or 4 years and headed off to Caistron Lake. Lovely spot although a bit noisy in the afternoon due to the gravel workings. Rain stopped just as we arrived and it turned out to be quite a nice afternoon. There were a lot of light olive flies coming off the water however there were very few fish rising. A couple were top and tailing obviously taken the emerging flies. Barbless hooks are required here and I didn't have any so had to close the barbs with pliers. Hooked 2 Rainbows, first was a stockie and los it as it swam towards me. The second was a good fish, reckon 7-10lb, bugger jumped and snapped my hook. Think the hook had been weakened due to closing the barb up. Will be back as soon as I stock up on some barbless flies.
Well worth a visit, seen some very big fish cruising around. £15 for 4 hours, 2 fish then catch and release.
