After the disappointment of going up on the 13th without any gear (the website said it was closed due to ice) and being gutted at seeing shed loads of anglers with full bags of trout... I headed up on Saturday for my first sesh.
Left the house just after 5:00 to get there for 6:30 so I could get 'my' spot, couldn't wait to get cracking.
First fish at 8:40, after losing the first 2 off the hook just out of netting distance (was getting a bit worried I was doing something wrong...). Between that fish and the next at about 10:30 I had at least 3 or 4 bites but missed everyone of them.
Then between 12:00 and 2:00 I pulled in another six (and lost another one off the hook at some point). All Rainbows between 2 and 3lb, I was on the ledger using magic dust with orange powerbait and maggot.
Only my second season fishing, and the first time I've ever taken home a full bag, it felt bloody great lads! The 2 lads about 30 yards away (worm on the float) blanked, as did a couple of fella's on the fly (I know how that bloody feels, I blanked on 2 of my 4 visits to Grassholme last year). Even the wind wasn't too bad.
On the down side I snapped my rod trying to negotiate the gate at the end of the dam wall... but, I've got an excuse to buy a new one now.
Cracking start to the season though!!! Hope to try the fly either this summer or next (sick of been told I haven't tried proper fishing yet ).
Cheers lads.
