just wondering if anyones been 'troutin' on the local stillwaters of late? i don't think i've been on the fly since about october and am now suffering withdrawals! first winter for a few years now that i haven't been out at all (foolishly chased ol' bucket mouth all winter, managed 3 keepies) know the weather hasn't been condusive ie 2 inches of ice doesn't help with getting ya flies down, but who's stuck it owt? where've you been? what you caught? it's been very quiet with regards fly reports, please give me something

    Nivvor Been Trootin aall Winta

Like yersell, I've been in pursuit of those green and grey bug---s since October (without a geet deal of success, I might add).

BUT, we had wor A.G.M. at me trout fishin' club last week and we're aall rarin to start on 22nd March.

We've planned a big pre-season stocking and what with the fish that have over-wintered and the natural head of browns that we have it should be a good 'Opening' (that's if it's not frozzen ower).

    Tight lines,

        Waskerley

        Wotfettle Dicky,

The lake is run by 'North West Durham Angling Association' and we allow five day tickets per day at a cost of £10 per rod.

There is a two fish limit but fly anglers can have unlimited catch-and-release until the second fish is killed. Day-ticket wormers cannot catch-and-release.

We maintain membership levels to 150 so there is usually a waiting list for entry.

Yearly subs are £70 which gets you unlimited visits with a two fish bag limit plus C & R until second fish is killed (there is also a one-off payment for new members of £35). So your first year would be £105 and £70 per year thereafter.

Members have the option of fishing two lakes: Waskerley Park and Smiddy Shaw but only Waskerley has day-tickets.

As far as 'busy' is concerned, if you see six rods on, thats considered 'busy'. Many's the time I'm up there on my own during the week.

So there's always stacks of space, bearing in mind that it must be around 80 acres (Takes about an hour to stroll round it.

Mind you it's not a 'Big Fish' water with the average 'stockie' being around fourteen inches but there's plenty of them. There are a few bigger browns in there in the 4 to 12 pound range (biggest brownie last year was a 10 pounder taken by a member on fly).

There's also a breeding head of wild browns and every September we put in a couple of hundred rainbows to enable us to fish past the brown-trout 'close season'

A bonnier wee spot you couldn't wish to see and it can be accessed from the main 'Moor Road' by taking the turn-off to the left about two miles past 'The Moorcock' pub. Watch-out for the signpost stating 'Hawkburn' and 'Waskerley Way'. Its about a half mile down the single track road to the lake.

Ignore the turn-off for 'Waskerley Station' which is only about a quarter mile past 'The Moorcock'

Sorry if all this seems a bit laang-winded but I think it answers aall ya questions.

        Tight lines,

        Drof

Sorry to butt in but is it ok for disabled access Alan? Obviously I wouldn't expect it being suitable everywhere but maybe parts are ok?

I have lived in Consett all my life but never been and had a look around Waskerly. A lot of my summer shore fishing is impossible now so looking for other ideas to keep me occupied.

          Jim.

Wheyaye, there's disabled access. Athough most of the lake is typically 'difficult' depending on the degree of disability

The designated 'Disabled Access' point is immediately at the bottom of the single track road leading down from the moor. Turn slightly right at the tee junction and drive through the double gate and over the cattle-grid. You can get your car virtually onto the waters edge.

Cheer's for the info, I will have a drive up and have a look around. I can get about a little but can't walk very far, as long as I took my seat up with me I should be ok with the occasional rest. I've got to try something to get me out of the house in the warmer weather.

                Jim.

If you turn right at the tee junction at the bottom of the road down from the moor (instead of going left towards the 'Fishing Lodge') after about 200 yards you'll come to a grassy clearing with picnic tables. It's a pleasant place to sit and take-in the scenery.

Even better, SWMBO would be quite happy sitting in the sun reading a book while I got on with some fishing.

                    Thanks again.

                    Jim.

Wheyaye, might bump into yeeze up there. I'm up there at least twice a week when the weather improves.

Mind you if you plan a week-end trip it might be prudent to ring Graham Robinson in advance and book your place (there's only five day-tickets and when they're gone, that's it).
