had the pleasure of taking my twin 12yr old nephews fishing so decided the derwent would be the closest and best chance of them catching so an early start up at 6am and out the the door in half an hour .by the time we got up there my head was ringing with the 20,000 questions I had answered got a family ticket which at £25 for 12 fish was good value picked our spot and started fishing . the first fish fell to me on float fished worm quickly followed by the younger one of the the two then the older one got a nice roach then nothing for a few hours . they had both settled down to watching there floats so I had a go on the fly first cast I was in to a good fish and lost it tried loads of flys but all the fish wanted was a kate mc on the top dropper the day ended at 7.30pm and the scores ended with 1 roach then four bows and the rest to me 1 on worm the rest on the kate the drive home was a peaceful one they didnt even wake up when I had to try and stop my 2 ton brick (discovery) because a numpty in a bad boy corsa pulled out on me

Went up there myself on Sunday, started in the Bay of Plenty and got a fish third cast on a black pennell, then came the horrendous downpour so packed up and went back home for a few hours. Came back around 3pm and fished straight into the wind from the spillway. The wind was so strong that my Sonik SK3 felt like a soft action rod. Caught one and lost 2 again both on the black pennell. What a killer fly, has always worked well for me up the Derwent for years. And I also cristened my new sink tip line . One guy caught his bag limit from the spillway and another had five all on either the bibio or dawson olive. So apart from the wind it was a great day out.

the kids kept wanting to move as they weren't getting a bite but I cast my flies between their floats and got fish , the fish were feeding on top , you can get days like that when they lock on to one food source and unless you match it exactly they will refuse to even look at it . I seem to get at least a few fish by trying every fly in my box till I get a take and vary depth retrieve till you find the fish . sounds easy but can be very hard and frustrating work
