well mate i been a sea fisherman for about 30 yrs now and only got into fly fishing about 2 months ago and i can tell you i am converted, a heck of a lot more fight and sport on a fly rod than on a beachcaster or an out and out rock rod, a 3 lb trout will give ya a better fight than a 10lb cod, and i know cos i have caught both ( cod from the wherry about 3-4 yrs ago)

you will need an E.A rod license to fish the river {they are available from local post office} and there is 2 types of license 1 is for non migratory trout and course fish the other is for sea trout and salmon each license allows you to fish with 2 rods nearly every where in the uk i think the course 1 is around £26 a year and the salmon is around £80 or something like that you can also get 24 hour licenses aswell as for the river wansbeck i have never fished it but have heard about barbel and chub being in it hope this helps dean

never fished the wansbeck myself, the licence covers you to carry 2 rods BUT only to fish 1 rod at a time, also when you purchase a fresh water licence it does NOT mean you can fish anywhere FREE of charge, only free stretches of river, otherwise join an angling club or buy a days ticket to fish the water/river you want

i thought it was you can fish with 2 rods at a time and if you fish with 3 you need 2 licenses

That's right, or at least it's definitely right for the coarse/trout licence. I don't know for sure offhand, but I very much doubt you're allowed to target migratory fish with two rods.

Like Jimmy says, don't forget that the EA licence is just a licence which enables you to use a rod – you'll need permission to fish too, which will usually cost you, whether it's a day ticket or a season ticket. There's a bit of free water about, but not loads, so you'll usually find that joining a club will be best value. You can pay a fortune for this, but there's plenty of reasonably priced fishing about too.

Practically all the river fishing in this part of the world is for trout and salmon though, which means that you may well find restrictions on how you can fish as well as where and when you can fish. Many clubs are fly-only, although they sometimes allow bait fishing in some stretches at certain times of the year. I've never fished the Wansbeck either, but I know there are a number of clubs controlling various bits of it, as well as a free stretch in the town centre at Morpeth. Your best bet would be to ask in somewhere like Game Fishing Supplies in Morpeth – they'll be able to tell you who has which bit and how it's fishing. Like I said though, it's going to be mainly trout with a handful of grayling in some spots.

I,m like Jimmy with my fishing-just got onto the fly over the last couple of years but i do really enjoy the sea fishing.
Think mainly because i was brought up by the coast and there is no licences to pay etc.
I also really like being out on a boat off Whitby or Craster.
