FISHING REPORT 5/7/09
It has been another hot week with plenty of blue skies and sunshine. While this is lovely weather in general it is not ideal for fishing! Never the less the fishing has been pretty good given the conditions. Nymphs and dries have still been catching plenty of fish but also small fry patterns and other mini lures are starting to catch well as the trout cotton on to the fry in the water now. The trout are definitely sitting deeper in the water during the heat of the day and so fishing slow and allowing your flies to sink down is a good tip. The big weed beds that are forming now will harbour plent of food and targeting them with small patterns should find a trout or two.
Best Rainbow this week goes to Matthew Cartwright of Stockton who landed a cracking trout of 15lb 8oz. Matthew caught this excellent fish on a gold head damsel fished on a floating line. Matthew was fishing on Mill lake in the margins and this tactic accounted for another 8 rainbows and a nice brown trout of 3lb . David Williamson of Birmingham on holliday in the area fished the lakes 3 times this week catching a total of 27 fish his best rainbow estimated at 14lb anh his most unusual catch a stunning Perch of 2lb+. Peter Stephenson of Newto Aycliffe caught 12 fish during an evening session all falling to small Black Dries. Tom our resident coach caught over 20 fish in one session on Diawl Bach's and was broken twice by double figure fish.
The best flies this week were Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, Invicta, Klinkhammers, Black Hoppers, Hares Ears and mini lures.
The lakes are now open until 9.00 pm on an evening and and evening ticket (4pm onwards) is available for £8.
