  • Opening Day Waskerley

Took my Grandson up for a session, yesterday.

The howling wind blowing off the moor proved too difficult for the little fella to cast a fly so we got the worming gear out.

Finished up with two Browns and two 'Bows atween us.

There was only six other rods on but one guy who persevered with 'the fly' finished up with six fish.

All in all, a promising start to the season.

Very brave I must say, we had a look in to Waskerly on the way back from Witton at about 5ish and it was blowing an absolute hoolie. I think I might have seen you actually, did you have a little tent?

'cos we fished 'the worm' and had a shedload of kit to carry, I opted to fish 'close to the car', so we just went down to the right of the only remaining picnic table in the parking area.

If you are fishing the fly, then you need small black patterns size 12, 14 or even 16 : Black and Peacock Spiders, Zulus, Katie Macs, Blck Pennel Spiders all work on the browns. BUT, don't f'get that there's 'Bows' and 'Blues' in there as well so lures will also take fish (I've even had a tiny brown on a geet 'Cat's Whisker')

Be prepared to move around the lake to improve your chances. Hot spots include : where the burn flows in at the bottom of the access road (North side), the beach on the far side of the dam, the dam wall itself if there's a breeze blowing onto it but my favourite spot is where the burn flows in around 300 yards down from the beach on the far side.

Cold, early season days are best fished with an intermediate line or a floater with weighted flies on a laang leader to get them doon and a slow retrieve.

One safety tip which is VERY important : if the level is 'down' a bit watch out for 'soft' areas which can literally bog you down when wading and, being a quiet fishery, there may not be anyone aroond to pull you oot the sh--e!

            Tight Lines,

            Drof

              P.S.

To save on 'leg-work' you can drive over the dam and park on the Sooth side if you like.
