Wed 17/03/09 went to shapely springs for a days fly fishing, started at about 10.00am,conditions were sunny light breeze,i used every bit of fluf and feather that i had in my arsenal, and at 5.10 pm my right arm was like a shot cock, i was so out of touch with the game ,after two years off that i felt like a novice. It took quite a few casts to get the rhythm going again , but a bit of perseverance, paid off in the casting sense,as i am back to casting as good as i did 2 years ago ,however that is where the good bit ends and the bad bit begins, i never had a single tug ,not one ,nothing, bad side of that is no one asked if i needed any help ,hardly anyone spoke, and if you spoke to anyone ,it was a quick "hello" and they would be gone, nothing like the banter you get when you are sea fishing .In Fact a bit stuck up if i were to tell the truth,i did wonder if this was the reason that i gave it up the first time .But im not going to give up this time , i will have to get the rest of the lads who go sea fishing with me ,to learn fly fishing, at least i will have someone to talk to if things aren't going good .
so hear we go ,im after some advice on which fly to use and what type of retrieve to use with that fly, also i am after the bigger rainbows so advice would be helpful in that area as well where to go and a rough idea what to use, any advice would be gratefully accepted
I'M NOT FAT ITS JUST THAT I HAVE A SLIPPED CHEST

At risk of boring the t--s off everybody re. 'Waskerley', it has to be said that not all waters are as 'stand-offish' as Sharpley Springs.

Get yersells up to wor lake and, if there are any members fishing, every single one will take time out to give advice to those who ask.

I do it about twice a month (even occasionally hand flies out to those who haven't got the right patterns with them.)

In fact its how we get most of our applications for membership. Folk see what it's like on a day-ticket, like the crack and surroundings, then apply for membership.

      Give it a go.

Went fishing up there with me dad a while back and nothing was pulling for me and me dad so i thought i would give a black buzzer a go. I pulled about 3 times but unfortuantly it was my first time and struggled a canny bit and lost all three
Buzzers are your best chance they always seem to work
keep kids off the streets, give them a rod.

i fish sharpley regularly mate there are a few queer fingers up there but is an excerlent fishery there are a lot of sea anglers who also fly fish get up there i allways finnd a long leader with flourocarbon may b 6lb works best with various flies and techniques maybe try a zonker under an indicator or a team of very sparesly dressed buzzers drifted round slowly or some pulling worms on an intermediate line with indicator fishing try varying the depth of your fly till you find the depth the fish are feeding at a good indication is watch how far down the fish are swimming arond are hope this helps you a bit anyway good luck

Karl-i fished Derwent couple days back and started 10am and did not catch out till 4:15pm. I could see some fish coming in and asked the lads nearby there methods.
Black fritz seemed to be the order of the day on an intermediate line near the bottom.
The guys next to me were in there 70,s-nice enough blokes.
I think a lot of the anglers just like the peace-or might think they are interfering. I have picked up quite a lot of info though-mind i am 48 so am an old fogie myself. I also have a couple of trout fishing mags which a lad at work buys and gives me after he is finished with them.Mag is called the Trout Fisherman-some good info and tips in there.
Sea fishing is also not as intensive as fly fishing.you seem to stand around a lot when on the beach or pier but with fly fishing its all go-maybe another reason people do not speak.
            Mick.
