The final of the West House £500 Winter League produced an exciting match with some excellent angling and a thrilling finish
Relative novice competition angler Paul Moore of Hetton Le Hole defeated some top quality anglers including England internationals to lift the trophy. This was by far Pauls biggest win and by his own admission he was shaking with nerves as he landed his last fish to secure victory over Richard Landsbury last years champion.
The morning session proved quite difficlut for most of the competitors with only odd fish being landed. The only person making an impression was Paul Moore who landed 4 fish on his second peg to go into an early lead. Most of his fish came to an Olive Worm fished on an intermediate line. Terry Sharp though he was off to a flier when he hooked into a large fish but to the amusement of his fellow anglers it turned out to be a 12lb Carp and therefore would not count. Richard Landsbury made his move on his last two pegs of the morning finishing the morning session with a total of 5 but Paul kept on catching with his trusty worm and finished on a total of 8 for the morning. Their nearest rivals were Ali Tait on 3 and a number of anglers on 2 fish each.
After lunch Richard Landsbury made his charge landing 5 fish on his first two pegs for a total of 10. Scott Nellins, made a move catching 5 early fish and Chris Micallef moved stealthily up the leader board with 5 fish in the afternoon session. Terry sharp continued catching big fish with a 15lb Rainbow caught on a Cats Whisker. The only person not catching was Paul Moore who watched his lead slip as Richard moved ahead. With one move left Richard led Paul by 10 fish to 8 and Richard looked assured to repeat his victory of last year. Paul finally rediscovered his form in the last 30 minutes and hooked 5 fish landing 2 to finish on a total of 10 equalling Richards total but as Pauls first fish of the day was caught before Richards it was Paul who took the title.
