Well after another job cancellation decided to go to Higham for a few hours.
Conditions were going to be tough as the sun was shining bright and the water was clear and like glass.
After a natter with the lad in the lodge and being told it had been hard going over the past couple of days i wasn't expecting to catch.
Started of with a cdc emerger and had one fish take a look and then swim off. So I started to go through every fly in the box and move constantly around the top fly lake.
After about 1.5hrs and watching fish top all over I went back to the emerger. After about 10mins I cast out and put my rod down to pour a coffee....big mistake!!! No sooner did i have flask in one hand and cup in the other than the loose line on the floor started to strip away into the water. Quickly dropped everything and picked up the rod but it was too late the fish was gone.
I dried the fly out, drank me coffee and put a Daiwl Bach on a dropper.
3rd cast and wallop didn't see the fish but god it took hard. Line was tripped from the reel in seconds. Took control and landed a nice blue for just under 3lb.
All went quiet again and every fly was put on again.
About 15mins before pack up time i got into the bottom corner where i'd watched a fish rise all day. The lad who'd been there had left so i took the opportunity to nip in.
Put the emerger back on and after about 5mins the fish took the fly!!! a little tussle ensued and the fish jumped clean out the water and spat the hook!!
Had time for a couple more casts, so back in it went. Saw a fish swirl underneath but not take so in it came. Blew on it to dry it and then thought this is it last cast, gotto get it this time!!!
Luckily for me the fish was playing out and as I slowly pulled the fly over the spot it came and took it down!! Couple of mins later and my second was in the net. A nice raindow for about 1.5lb.
Packed up and went home with 2 fish and a big grin. Have to say the little one gave me more satisfaction as I'd had my eye on it for about an hour.
Fishing was tough but the weather was fantastic (not in fishy way tho').
Roll on winter and the big sea's
Tight lines to all.
Cheers Tony
