  • River Derwent.

Hello lads took the dog down teatime at Allansford checking out the water for some worm fishing. Got a bit of a shock. You can tell the place has been hit by the flood water. Rocks all over the place and sand washed out big wooden braches smashed all up the river. Water still running fast so i,ll leave it for a couple of days.

Have you had a look at any of the rest of the river?

One of the footbridges at Shotley is gone and the Butterfly Bridge at Winlaton Mill has been broken off as well!

On the plus side though, it's almost like we've got a whole new river to play with - everywhere I've looked there are new gravel banks that have been thrown up and new pools and all sorts.

Its amazing how the rivers contours have changed. Frank Kearney my mate has a house on the Derwent near the bridge on the A68 and he has lost some brickwork which fronted onto the river.

I,m going to have a go with some worm tomorrow when i finish work all being well.

      Mick

ps ot is possible for all the fish to have been swept away?.

Did you get down, Mick? I've not had a chance yet, but I had a quick look at the river behind the tennis courts at Winlaton Mill this afternoon and it's starting to look very fishy indeed - just hope it's the same upstream on the Derwent AA water. In the shallower sections, the river's also noticeably a lot clearer too, presumably because all the silt's been washed onto the fields!

It is amazing how much it's changed though.

Got down couple days back. Big mistake. Was tired with all the earlies i,ve been doing. Started at the old Ford. Just up from where the bridge came down at Shotley. Current was still to fast so decided to go to Allansford. As i lifted my small 7ft fly rod over my young son who was sitting in the back of my Picasso IT SNAPPED. Never mind went back home and tried to keep awake before my next earlies.

              Another rod required.

Forgot to mention about the riverbank. Totally different down Allensford. Thinner and deeper in places. And rocks and pebbles everywhere along the banks.

Ouch! Well, at least you've got the winter to save up for it…

I must admit I bought a few lug in the week but didn't get the chance to get out and use them up, so I'm probably going to head to the coast for a few hours some time this weekend.

I was down at Ebchester today though, counting down the last couple of weeks of the trout season. Blanked, of course, although I did briefly hook into a decent fish at that run below the bridge. (Which was on the far bank until a couple of weeks ago, but now it's completely moved to the near bank!) I tried everything - started on dries, then changed to the duo, then the trio and then got in a tangle and lost the last couple of feet of my leader so I stuck a big heavy nymph for the last few hundred yards before I got back to the car.

Went down today for an hour with the big fly rod. Was about 10 fishing at the dam. Couple of Polish with fixed spools and ordinary rods. Explained the rules and they sort of understood. They did actually have day fishing licences but no Derwent day passes. Anyway think they were a bit embarrassed and off they went.
Others were just kids who did,nt seem to have a clue. But believe it or not they had fishing licences too.
One guy was on the bank further up the river fishing with worm and he had a nice Brownie. Said he had caught a nicer one but it had got away.
PS could,nt help myself today even though i went off duty this morning at 7am. It annoys me i have paid for my membership and people fish clubs water without paying.
