Got to the lake around 8:35 am this morning, setup and fishing by 8:45.
Morning was quite slow, lots of small stuff about mainly skimmer bream and gudgeon, i started off with a size 18 hook and single maggot on a feeder rig, got sick of the small stuff so decided to up hook size to a 12, baited with double maggot, managed to weed out some better fish, but still on the small side { around 1lb}.
Decided to give the float a go for a bit as conditions were ideal, again plagued by small stuff for a few more hours so decided to go back to the feeder, but this time i was using double maggot tipped off with a bit of sweetcorn, got a nice little mirror carp 1st chuck around 2lb, then managed another 4-5 carp of similar size, before hooking into something much better, it took me 5 mins or so to wrestle it out of the reeds and overhanging tree, just about had it in the net when it rolled and spat the hook, was around 5-6 lb.
It then went a little quiet again for half an hour or so , then had few more small carp and 1 or 2 more good takes but just couldnt hook the little devils.
Last cast i decided to plonk my hookbait around 1 foot off the reeds and lay a nice little carpet of groundbait down as i was ready to up and off, saw around 4-5 carp feeding around my bait for around 5 minutes, getting some tentative knocks and line bites, then the rod swung right over , i managed to force it out the reeds and a couple minutes of scrapping landed a nice 5lb common carp, after that id had enough so packed up and got myself a kebab....
Good day all in all, a nice 10 hour session to start my season off.
