  • Reel backing.

can anyone tell me if its ok to join two pieces of flyline backing together and if so, which knot to use ? I have a Greys gx500 fly reel and it takes anywhere between 82m to 115m of reel backing depending on which line I want to use. I have a few spools of 50m backing and wonder if its ok to join them up to make the required distance /

    Cheers.

Cant see any problem with joining backing together so long as its a good strong knot. Something like a double Blood knot is good for lines of equal diameter. Think that's its name lol

Just a word of warning: I did this a number of years ago. One day while fishing a stocked lake for rainbows I hooked the fish of my lifetime, played it for about 10 minutes and off it went like a train stripping line off the reel and I couldn't do anything about it; down to the backing and it was still stripping line; then I heard the knot in the backing going up through the rod rings and it jammed in the tip ring.
        PING!!
Fish gone; and I never even seen how big it was.

Thanks Lads, I think it will be a backing line with no knots or joins then !!! Cheers for the help though. Great news that the new fishery at Thrunton is opening on the 5th of April ! Cannot wait to give it a try.

          Cheers.
