  • Fishing Spots For Youngins'

Hi I am desperate to take my 6 year old grandaughter trout fishing. She has already been "flatie bashing" with me and successfully caught a flatie and a weever ! She was so chuffed, but I am realy dying for her to catch a rainbow trout.
So can anybody tell me or advise me of an ideal reservoir/lake that she can worm fish and I can fly fish in safety and comfort. I have never worm fished for trout myself so any advice on float rigs ledger rigs etc would be greatly appreciated, as I have only ever fly fished.
I fish the Derwent quite regular, but would like to try a smaller venue with a good chance of her catching something.
    Anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks to anyone who can give me any info.........can't wait to see her face if she catches one.

try scaling dam near whitby if not too much of a run for you the dam wall is excellent as it has no drop offs and is safe - she would fish for free.

Sharpley have a small worm lake(you can also use sweetcorn), costs £10 for 3 fish, you must kill your first 3 fish.
Fish can range from just over 1lb to 7lbs depending what the trout farm puts in.
Some days you can catch your 3 fish in the first 3 casts and on others i have seen anglers blank (albeit beginners).
The downside to the fishing on this lake is once you have caught your 3 fish then there is no catch and release and session has ended.
      Hope this helps.
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

            Hi Vamp,
YOur best bet Is Derwent Resevoir, plenty of bank space, and she can use powerbait if sh doesnt like worms. There are some good fish to be had, and the access is easy to most marks. Permit (I think) from Edmundbyers post office, but someone may correct me.
            Im taking my goddaughter there.
            Have fun mate.

Thanks to everyone for the replies......I could still do with some info on what type of rigs to use with worm or power bait, I don't even know how to mount power bait onto the hook, or how efective it is ?

              Cheers.........BAZACODBASHA

South Linden Fishery has a worm pond which I have heard is great for the kids....Just a nice size and they are really helpful
"And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"

The permits for Derwent are available at their on site shop, I think it opens at about 07:30ish. With powerbait you can either buy the 'eggs' which are already moulded, these you can hook on, or a putty like substance which you mould round the hooks. Power bait floats, so I have always used it on a ledger rig with the hook length varying between 1 and 2 meters off the ground depending on the conditions, sun etc. Bubble floating I would probably use worm, corn or both as a cocktail, again varying the depth I fished. The small pond opposite the angel of the north fisheries is a trout pond, it used to be a dog shelter I think, it costs a couple of quid but you are almost certain to catch, good fun for youngsters. Hope this helps.

Higham lakes at Ponteland has a worm lake that you can also fly fish on , you could fish right next to her and watch for bites on her rod.
She can either float fish or ledger , if there is a bit of a wind blowing probably better to ledger as you'll not need to keep recasting for her every few minutes. Spinning rod , spinning reel, 6lb line straight through to a size 8 or 10 hook with a 1/2 oz arsley bomb sliding on the line will do.
If it's nice and still swap the bomb for a float and a soft splitshot either side of it so it can be moved up or down to try different depths.
If you have to ledger and the fish are off the bottom , you can pop up the worm with a poly ball or a bit of cork ?
If she can catch a flattie she can catch a rainbow , they are'nt exactly timid when it comes to taking baits .

                    Ray.
