Well ive got the gear now just need the bottle to go and use it.
just tried it out on the field and ended in a big bunch of line so i think the trout will be safe for a while. these braided loops are also a night mare

the key to practising is tie a leader on an put a 4inch piece of wool at the end of it. Do not try and power the cast like shore fishing let the rod and line do the work. stop your hand dead at about 2 oclock do not bend the wrist, wait until the line has straigtened out behind you (on a good cast you will feel the back cast weight come onto the rod) then bring the cast forwards to about 10 oclock again do not bend writst. you can then let line out on either the back or forward cast but stop the line with the left hand before line straightens (if doing another dummy cast) or follow the cast through if laying the line on the water.

Are you up north of the region or down here with us smoggies.

      Simon,
      First bit of advice.
If The braided loop has length between the end of your flyline, and the actual loop, you wont get a smooth roll as the line turns in the air, It will kind of hinge on the loop, understand?? The flyline should be right inside the braid tube, far enough so that it is right against the beginning of the loop.
Also, whilst you practise, you dont need any trace or loop on, just get used to casting the flyline first mate.

      PS, where do you live?

I found a large rubber band or a jumper/jacket with big cuffs helped

hold the rod as you would and either elastic band the butt of the rod around your wrist, or pull your jumper/jacket cuff over the butt or butt and reel.. it hels stop you flexing your wrist!

thanks for all the info lads, I'm from a little village called fishburn just north of sedgefield,
the gear i have bought is very cheap till i decide whether i like fluf chucking and probably overpowering i went for an eight weight fiberglass rod a shakespear real and a cheap eight weight floating line.
Anyway I'm very impatient so went to sharply tonight for three hours, didn't get a touch ,i used the above set up coupled with a 9ft length of 6lbs fluorocarbon, and went through all the limited flies i have,i felt that i should have also taken a mono leader as the flouro sank every time resulting in quite a bit of weed on the hooks
Any way still enjoyed myself gonna see if the fpo is up for a run to derwent tomorrow to walk the dogs, i don't have an ulterior motive of course and i didnt realise id left the rod in the car (lol)

try west house farm at stillington i think it is only 8 quid for a 4 hour sporting ticket. well worth the money also there is lots of space to cast with not a lot of trees etc behind you.

Hi mate you can't be that old if you don't remember the coke works at Fishburn.
I'll pm you and meet you somewhere easy.As to the flies a general selection would cdc's,buzzers, cat's whisker's,hare's ears, blobs and fritzes also some parachutes if there is'nt a lot of wind.
                      Hope that helps.

                          Hi Simon,

CDC Literally stands for Cul de Cunard, (Bottom of the duck) small oily feathers that wont sink, so sit just in the waters surface, imitating a fly struggling to get out of the pupae.
Mono may be better, but shouldnt make that much difference. You havent got a sinking loop on have you??

Cheers for that, No idea about the loop it came with the fly line which is a floater so i doubt it, should i try a bit of gink or is that only for dry flies, and how can i tell adry fly from a wet , and whats a lure as opposed to a nymph, whats a tippet is it diferent from a cast , is it wort bying them or should i make them ,bloody hell my head hurts with all these questions

why dont we organise an evening at west house. I think it is 8 quid for a 4 hour evening sporting ticket - not a lot of dosh to learn on a live water so to speak.

                              Anyone else up for it.
