Any post office for a licence,as for hiring gear you might be better borrowing some off someone you know,as I've never heard of anywhere hiring gear.

Definetly borrow some kit, it's actually cheap enough to buy as well, just don't go too cheap or it might make casting a bit harder (similar to cheap sea angling multipliers only it's the rod that does the work with fly fishing) The gear is relatively cheap as you don't lose terminal tackle that often and you don't have to buy bait. £30 worth of flies could last you a lifetime, especially if you catch bot all and stay away from trees. The thing that adds up I suppose is the prices many managed waters charge. I still swear buy Tunstall at £85 a year although you may not catch everytime I think I'm right in saying that joining local angling clubs gets you very cheap access to rivers as well, if your just starting out why not learn to fish a river first?

It's a perfect thing to be doing when the NE winter season ends. Even the most basic of sea angling casters are experts in things like friction and inertia and compression of rods and that, casting a fly line reasonably well is an absolute piece of pish - I thought hang on is this it, when I was first shown and had a go - I thought you had to go to university to learn how to do it. Mind that was yark and hoy these pesky rivers are causing me grief, need to learn how to roll cast next.

Simon, If you live anywhere near me,( Benton) Ill gladly lend you some gear mate. If youre buying, Try Bagnall and Kirkwood, Grey St. ask for Brian Irons. Tell him youre Paul Hunters mate, and hes sent you in for basic kit so you wont get ripped off.

I am a sea angler who has just converted to fresh water.( i,ll be back next Nov)

I went into the shop at the Derwent resevoir and said " Im a sea fisherman can you tell me how to fresh water fish. In particlar fly fishing".
The lads inside were spot on. I bought a starter kit for £99 for fly fishing. I got a reel and one of the guys put on all the line for me ( backing,intermediate and floating line). The kit also had a lovely 3 piece rod in a nice tube A net for getting the fish. Box of flys. Spare line for traces.
In this package i also got a free days fishing worth £18.
I also got my fresh water licence from the resevoir shop for £25.
The guys were telling me about fly fishing lessons at £20.
I decided to learn by watching other people and also on a field.
I have now had two days fishing at the resevoir and i am mastering this flyfishing lark. Its a case of looking about and asking advice.
You can also fish using float,spinner or ledger.
Bait is amazing,its called power bait. A tiny pot with little balls inside. Two or three on your hook and its dynamite.

If you do not live far from the resevoir pop in. I don,t think the stater kit outlay is bad at all.

cheers for the advice lads,Mick its nice to here of someone in the same boat to speak as myself,£99 doesent sound to bad but i want to give it a go first,if i enjoy my calloway irons and other golf gear will be sold so a reasonable set up can be bought,just found a auction on ebay where i can try including gear so it looks if thats my next move

Simon.....I bought a Shakespeare starter kit a few years back which cost me £35, borrowed some flies off me brother in law( never gave him them back) and on my first session caught two rainbows while my brother in law with all his Hardy's and Greys gear, interchangeable reels, wading jackets and everything blanked.
Have caught virtually every single time on this outfit while people I have been with who have had all the top of the range gear have blanked!

Have a decent rod and reel now and built up my gear over time and you can tell the difference in quality, but to get started I swear by this kit!

i mick i was up Waskerley Reservoir,at the weekend and its got a sign in hunt NO POWER BAIT TO BE USED HERE

There seems to be different rules for different locations. Never fished Waskerly so do not know if you can ledger float or spin.
Might only be fly fishing.

Defo use power bait at Derwent, i bought it in their shop on recommendation from the staff.

PS My ultimate aim is to catch one on the fly rod. That bu--er the other day nearly pulled the rod out of my hand before he made his get away. He was a big un. I,ll be back.
Black nymphs/flys seemed to be the order of the day.

It was nice to get the thrill of fighting fish back again, Couple of the ones i caught on the powerbait leapt clear out of the water.My leader was only 8lb and i thought i,d lost more than i caught.

As far as I know only Northumbrian waters allow any method fishing.Most other waters,ie Waskerly,only allow worm or fly.A lot of smaller waters,Knitsley Mill,West House etc only allow fly.Its better to check before using that "power bait" stuff.Or you could be sine died off some waters.It was totally banned a couple of years ago,until NWB allowed it.

Simon, Ive just found a fly rod in tha garage I forgot I had, If youre near Benton, Ill give you t for nowt. Its not an expensive one, but Ittl get you started.

Cheers for that,our lass is twisting about me spending money until she knows im hooked so to speak,i live in fishburn and work in chester-le street ,i will pm you nearer the weekend when she tells me what my plans are lol
