  • carp fishing this time of year

Being someone who is just in the past 6-8 months getting into fishing as a whole, ive tried my hand at most things that ive been able to. The only course fishing ive done so far was 3 days on a tiny purpose built lake at a caravan park down lincolnshire. Where i honestly had a blast! Even though the fish were small i got so many different species it was a suprise everytime. So hopefully next week will be my second go at this type of fishing.

First off ill start with what i used my first time (lincolnshire, summer time) then say my ideas for next week and see what you guys think...

Getting up at 5am i started off my mixing oats and bread with water. I moulded it into golfball sized lumps and threw a couple in where i would be fishing. While the "feed" was settling i took the time to set up my gear. I was using a cheap rod and reel that i set up for ledgering. And a pole (not mine, dont have acess to it atm) with premade float and weights attached to the end. I baited both up with sweetcorn. Most other anglers were using maggots. I plopped the pole right infront of me and cast my rod about 10m away. Then threw 1 handful of sweetcorn around both hook baits. The pole worked alot better, but i have to say the biggest fish were landed from my rod.

So this time i will be going to aldin grange in bearpark durham. Never fished there in my life. I dont know why though as its only 3 mins drive from my house. Im thinking ground bait in first. Ill mash oats, bread, cat or dog biscuits (heard they can be used as boilies so why not mash em for sent) and the insides of a few pieces of sweetcorn. I have a spod rod, that i use for pier fishing and a large spool reel that ill attach a large floating feeder to the end. Cram it to the brim with the mash and chuck it in. Then set up my rod for ledgering. Sweetcorn as hookbait and scatter a few bits of corn around the hookbait.

What do you guys think of the plan? Im aware you guys might be laughing as i probly would if i knew more about this type of fishing, no one has ever taught me anything on how to fish for carp. Its all part of the fun :-) Id be over the moon if i got anything over 4lb as my record is a 3.4lb rainbow trout.

    Thanks
    Liam

    carp

Hello Liam and welcome to winter coarse fishing. The main difference between summer and winter is the amount of groundbait you put in,you need tofish without groundbait in the winter months whenthe fish only eat small amounts to conserve energy. Therefore carp become a lot harder to catch, themethod that produces the best results on the likes of aldin grange would be to use a bomb with either a single piece of sweetcorn or a 6cm piece of luncheon meat on the hook, try different size hooks say 14 16 or 18 to see which brings the best results. The main species to target in the winter are silver fish namely roach, bream and ide which you will catch on float with maggot and feed only a few every 2 or 3 casts.Hope this helps and don't be afraid to ask for advice at the fishery.

    Good luck Ian

I have fished the grange during the summer , lovely place , very well kept . From what i remember they have strict rules on ground baits and carp baits etc . Winter carp fishing is a long term game in my opinion . There are some good lakes in north yorkshire but it is a waiting game for that one run .

Went to aldin grange today. Rocked up at about 07:15 started ledgering. Sweetcorn as bait. After 2 hours i moved pegs. Then again 3 hours later. Still nothing. Swapped baits a few times and swapped to float. After almost 8 hours without even a bite i moved pegs again. Straight away i was getting bites. The bugger took almost an hour before taking the bait. Just a 2lb common but it was worth it. No one else got a carp. They were pulling in tones of tiny slivers on maggot.

            bait

You need to take a selection of baits, for example sweetcorn, luncheon meat cubes, maggots and if you don't get bites on one the other may work.

Stay on the back of a cold wind, 2 or 3 grains as feed every bite.
Use as light a hooklenth and hook you can get away with, as the water will
tend to clear as the fish go more torpid.
feeding spells become shorter as the water cools, fish for bites and dont build a swim.
              HTH.
If its got t1ts or tyres, its gonna be trouble.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem
