  • Sleakburn wed

I cant understand how other fisheries can stock fish 2lb+ plus and Sleakburn cant stock fish above 1/2lb.

Used to fish at Sleakburn as regular as clockwork(3 mins from home) and at the time the stocking policy was exceptional, I actually helped to run the place for 3 years.
This latest turn round ie having to book to fish when the place is nearly always empty seems a bit crazy, as Nigels states , fish to 1/2 lb is not going to turn too many heads.
Still, I guess Marty (owner) has his agenda and must think it will pay in the long run. Best of luck to him as he is a great lad, in the meantime I will be travelling a little farther afield to capture some sport.

Seddo I like the place in the spring before the weed growth. Its a shame they are going to find people will be going to higham simlair pricing, alot better stamp of fish and turn up pay your five hour ticket.

I travel all over fishing but like to support the local fisheries also, but not with that stocking policy.

Our local waters need us to use their facilities and I totally agree about supporting fisheries as they are the suppliers of our sport and we would be badly off without them.
The criteria is value for money, I would rather travel a few miles to fish for stock averaging 2lbs or so than fish on the doorstep for fish in the region of 3/4lbs.
I believe Sleekburn is starting to stock with a few bigger fish, according to the craic.
        Nuff Said.

According to the Sunday Sun fishing reports, Sleekburn fishery is yeilding lots of fish in the 3 to 4lbs bracket and the rod average is 7+.
Any comments on this report Nigels.!!
I don't go there now but I fancy this could be a bit of a Red Herring

            LOL

You got more chance of catching a Red Herron at sleekburn than a 3lber. Its a shame but you get the same big fish reports every year.

I have never seen a fish bigger than 2lb caught and that was in 2005. I hate running fisherys down but can only give an honest review. I fish with quite a number of people who would not go there any more. I bet you know a few who have said the same.

Yeh, your spot on Nigels, I have heard similar comments from other users of this fishery.
Lets hope Marty realises that a load of anglers + money is heading out of our area and that maybe a few larger fish stockings may halt the exodus of fishermen looking for a better days sport elsewhere.
I believe any fishery has to give reasonable value for money if they expect their customers to visit on a regular basis.
              Only time will tell!!

With me being new to this game, I think that's a place I will avoid for the time being.
I'm sure you lads didn't mean to put people off with this thread, but if that's the measure of the place, it's all that can be expected.

Shame really as it was a venue I was going to try out as it aint a million miles away.

                Cheers

I stopped fishing sleekburn 18 months ago, due to the small fish, and the huge amount of weed. I was surprised to read in the eds letter of this months Trout Fisherman, that Sleekburn prides itself on quality fighting fish of 1 ana half pound.
It was £1 less to fish sleekburn than Sharpley. Better surroundings, better Lodge, and far far better fish. No comparison really. I wouldnt fish Sleekburn again.
