If you live in the north-east of England and are passionate about the coast, you might be interested in THE BIG SEA SURVEY.
This is a three year long project run by Newcastle University, aimed at recording marine life along our coasts. This information is needed if they are to effectively monitor and detect changes occurring in marine biodiversity that have been caused by climate change or other human activity. The geographic limits of the project are from the Scottish border, north of Northumberland, down to Teesmouth/Hartlepool.
If you would like to participate your help would be very much appreciated. With the Big Sea Survey, you will be trained in species identification and in survey techniques. All equipment and training is free and lunch is provided on training days. You can then be involved as little or as often as you want, and so being involved should not impose heavily on your busy lives. Benefits include opportunities to contribute to conservation work, learning more about our rich natural heritage, having another reason to get out and about on our delightful coasts, and perhaps making new friends through the project. All volunteers should be 18 years or over.
Please contact Dr Jane Delany if you are interested and she can send information on how to register for their next training day.
