  • Amble Sunday 26 May

After landing and talking to a couple of people it seems there was little caught on Sunday, including the charter boats. We probably had it good compared to the rest, landing 4 codling and throwing a few smaller fish back. We fished Alnmouth-Boulmer fairly close in after leaving Amble around 07:30. I thought I may have missed a hurricane warning since we seemed to be the only boat fishing on a glorious Sunday morning. I supected everyone had been out on Saturday and caught nothing and didn't fancy a return match. It was hard going with no bites for the first couple of hours until we anchored up just south of the hard ground at Marden rocks then we started to pick up fish but we were just heading into slack water and decided to chance our arm in an another spot. That was a mistake because we could only ever seem to find sandy ground after that and had no more fish. This was my first attempt at anchoring and I shall be doing it again, the water isn't deep around the Boulmer area and it wasn't difficult retrieving the anchor on the sandy ground. I'll buy an anchor trip that should make the process a lot easier compared to tying line and its only a few quid. Compare that to the fortune I spend on lost tackle on these spring tides while drift fishing. I ended up with 8 nice tidy fillets and sunburn but what a day to be on the sea, a few more fish and it would have been the perfect day.

There were a lot of boats out Sunday, they all headed south it seems, us included, I think the method rather an the direction was the reason for your success , I'm not keen on anchoring , but faced with similar conditions again, I think thats what I'll do............or head way offshore!
Well done on catching when most failed

Well done, I spent the whole day telling myself to anchor up and nail a bait to the bottom and let the fish find it........ But I kept telling myself its nearly June and I should be catchin on the drift with shads.......lesson learned again, until the next time that is!!!! As suspected there are some fish there just conditions not right for the way we have been fishing for them! Great to hear you found a few, fishing at anchor can be very relaxing, bring on next weekend now!
