  • Catch Report "Grace" 22/05/13

With the poor forecast for Thursday and Friday we decided to give it a go and left Royal Quays at approximately 7.30am. The Tyne Dock guys are struggling with the debris in the river which is probably the worst I've seen and I spotted the pilot boat pulling in a full butane gas canister. Anyway, the cleaner water is up North so we hung a left and headed for the ground off Blyth. The Cod were in fine fettle and despite the wind with tide drift we were landing them on a regular basis. We landed at least 30 keepers and returned most of them other than some for the freezer and a few for the kids who fish from the wall opposite the Royal Quays. The North East wind was steadily lifting the sea and by lunchtime it was quite snotty. At slack water the fish went off the feed so we headed home and another good day was had with green twintails again doing the biz.

Good report and well done with the fishing
We have the same problem with debris coming out of the teas. Full trees and big planks of wood!

Nice window of fishing yesterday Tony and a few fish. I put the same in my report, never seen so much wood in the river etc.

Yep, the debris is a real problem and it seems to be hanging around longer than I expected. I watched the pilot boat trying to lift the gas bottle out of the river but they advised Tyne VTS that it was full and would have to tow it to a safe area. Could you imagine hitting a solid chunk like that!!! it doesn't bear thinking about it. The Northern waters are certainly cleaner and the fish are still feeding on the ground off Blyth so fingers crossed we don't get any more heavy rain.

I am away on the west coast boat fishing this weekend so wont be out but hoping for a sneaky mid-week trip next week if all is well. The water colour yesterday as you seen was very much like what we seen during the July flooding last year.

As you say the fish are now in on most of the normal marks and in better numbers so some settled weather and the arrival of the amckerel should see it bang into life.

Very poor on the west coast still, spoke to skipper, no tope, next to no mackerel and very few of anything else...so this cold winter has hit all grounds.
