  • Stingray Catch Report 22.05.2013

With not being out last weekend after having such a fun day on the Friday and away this weekend I was in need of a wrecking fix, so texts started flying at 8pm Tuesday night and myself, Dave (Blanked Again) and Graham (Big_Sid) agreed to meet up at the marina at silly o’clock or 5am, this was governed by two factors…1 I was required at work at 5pm and 2 the weather window looked like it would slam shut about mid-day or just after.

Anyway we met up and set off spending the next 2.5 miles dodging what is easily the worst amount of river debris I have ever seen, it was boarding on dangerous to all craft but after some good spotting and good driving we made it out into a flat calm sea that was as brown as a cup of coffee but after last Fridays trip hopes were high of more fish, so I set about mapping the route out and times due to the two factors stated above.

First wreck a single coalie 2nd and 3rd nothing and the water was just thick brown mud so stuff this bypass all inshore marks and plot new plan of attack. After a steam we hit the first wreck and bang 3 keeper codling around the 3-4lb mark straight away, next wreck nothing, following wreck ling a drop with the odd cod for around 1hr then it went dead as the tide changed and the drift speed increase from a nice 0.3k up to a rather fast 1.7k, anyway we moved further off in the hope of landing a few mackerel and dropped a string of daylights down each wreck stop but Dave just caught pesky cod on mackerel daylights instead so we gave up on mackerel after a few more wrecks.

Next wreck nothing, next wreck nothing again, next wreck mainly cod up to 5lb with the odd ling that included my first double of the year, 10lb 4oz

We all caught on this mark and would of stayed longer but the wind was starting to blow hard from the NE so we started the trip back home stopping at a couple more wrecks on the way but the only other fish from the 2 stops was this little devil

I am not sure how many the other lads got but numbers will be around 25-30 keepers, I landed 8 ling and 5 cod and a coalie (all but 4 returned alive). As expected thou on Q the NE wind started blowing hard and we soon had waves rolling at us around 5-6ft.

Had to wait ages until the Royal Quays staff made the lock safe to entre for boats as the full lock was wall to wall with wood, never seen anything like it, then I had to wait to get the ling verified; I rolled into work with 2 minutes left to spare and a long shift with a sun burnt face and sore arms to boot…..phew.

Nice day out and if the weather stays nice for you lads this weekend I can see some bumper catches.

Thats a good haul between the 3 of you, well done on sticking it out. That debris was all over Seaham on Sunday. Can imagine it being dangerous for small Craft.

Well done on the first double of the season Richy. With the amount of debris in the river as you say it will have to be daylight before I venture out the locks next week!

Everyday is a good day to be out fishing aboard Stingray Ritchie. A few decent fish for the conditions too.

Hopefully a few Tope will play ball over the weekend

So do i but after speaking with the skipper it looks like a species hunt or maybe pollack fishing maybe on the cards for day two. since they started in May they have only landed 2 tope, same time last year they landing 15-35 tope per day.Them like us are 3-5 weeks behind but at the end of the day it is nice to get a break away and maybe some new speices.

I will do a report regardless of if we catch anything or not and may even sneak Monday out on my boat if the weather is ok

Well done Rich. I was concerned the fresh water may have had negative effect on Craster but althugh water chocolate seemed ok and no debri as no river nearby. I have watched the tree trunks going up and down river on the Tyne and some are massive-easily enough t sink a boat. So you do right to be careful.

                              Mick.
