Travelled down to Amble for the first trip of the year. Unsure what we would find as reports thin on the ground, with Northerlies forecast, and plenty rain the day before. Conditions on arrival were thick fog and dirty water coming down the Coquet river. Leaving the harbour, the water started to clear but still a bit of colour which proved just a little too much for the shads. It was going to be a bait day on the grounds.
Six guys on the boat. Started off slow, picking up a few fish here and there. Nothing too big. Probably around the 2 to 3lb mark with quite a few throwbacks. Typical early season fare. The further away from the mouth of the river we got, the better the fishing got. The guy in the corner next to the cabin got a nice double shot of cod. On the other side Joe hooked into a real rodbender which threw the hook halfway up. Fish were coming in on a regular basis now. Various rigs were catching from single hook flowing traces with attractor spoons to simple daylight traces. All baits were taking including lug, crab, squid, cooked prawn and combinations of same.
Joe having earlier dropped a good fish made no mistake with the next one, a fresh looking 8 pounder . Ten minutes later he pulled up a 5 pound Pollack. Everyone was pulling in the odd fish almost non-stop.
Of course it didn’t last. The tide turned, the drift died, something changed. The last hour or so had only the odd throwback.
As well as the cod, and the Pollack, there were also some nice coalies, scotch haddock and a single wrasse to me. We saw one other boat out in the fog. They gave Dave a call and said they had a one or two mackerel on the boat
An enjoyable first trip of the season. Dave said there were 41 keepers for the boat (between six) and there were more throwbacks than that.
