  • Stingray 5/5/2013 Catch Report

With reports not great of late i decided to have a nice late start and spend the day wreck hoping given it 3-4 drifts then moving on. We left the marina at 8.30am and greated with a great view of the biggest cruise ship i have ever seen.

With myself, cou's Dave and Scotty on today, the target was the same as last trip out i.e 1 keeper per person.

After that we started making our way up the river and my plan was to hit some close in wrecks first when the tide was half way through the flood. We rounded the piers and the sea was rather good but as expected that wind was gusting on and off and this was to be the way of it today.

We plugged away on the close in wrecks but never had a bite or seen any sign of life on the fish finder but what we did see was laods of bird life all heading north. We made our way wreck hoping as we headed over the 10 mile mark. The sea went from a slight sandy blue colour to a bluey green once you passed the 7 mile mark.

8 wrecks down and no bites but the sun was in the sky and the coats came off.

But not all was lost at a 12.5 mile wreck we got some action on the fish finder and hit it bang on slack tide but with the random gusts setting a drift was not straight forward. We tried with bait first and had 2 fish on and off, next drift the drift had picked up to 1.2k so i thought i would try a shad along with Dave and bang first ling of the season at about 5lb on a small orange shad.

Next drift Dave hits into a fish and Scotty has one on and off, Dave brings up a small codling shy of 3lb.

Then that was it, we tried some ground and shared it with a charter from Sunderland and two prawn trawlers but no joy. We then started our ride back home stopping at two more wrecks and a second spot of rough ground but never got anymore bites.

So in total 4 fish on and 2 landed, nothing big but it was a start...sitting typing this with a sun tanned face at last

    Until next weekend

p.s Anyone going out Sunday check the gusts as the waves about 5 seconds apart and building with that strong SW wind.

Double p.s Anyone know a cheap supplier for TLD 15 bearings, mine have given up the ghoast after 3 seasons.

The spool bearings rarely need changing, most likely just the one behind the handle.
7X17X5 (S697zz) £1.75 each for stainless at RCbearings Limited (last time I bought some)
          Cheers, Keith.

Cheers Keith cheaper than i expected...need to strip it down and make sure first but sounds and feels like the bearing in the handle/spool has gone.

Yer it was hard going as we hit more wrecks than i could count but life is starting to show, shocked at how green (algi) the water is the further you go out.

Great report Richy, was a good read even without many fish involved

Surprised anyone got out today as the wind back here in gateshead was gusting pretty strong. I was outside painting and drips were blowing off my brush a good seven feet or so on to next doors drive, luckily their car wasn't there

                        Keep them coming

Cracking report and the effort and perseverance paid off with a couple of fish.
