We made the most of the sunny weather on Saturday and sailed up to St Mary’s can. The skipper read her book for a couple of hours while I fished. I couldn’t entice her to pick a rod up and don’t know how she can sit and read as the chop rolled us around.
The first drop hardly had time to hit the bottom before two codling found the two hooks baited with lug. And so it went on, with only two drops coming back without fish, and one of those was when the gear snagged and was lost. Fishing slowed at slack water, still giving bites only fewer of them for half an hour.
The fish were only small, ranging from 8oz to a couple of pounds, with the majority towards the smaller size. All of them went back into the shallow water.
There were a few other boats out at the can but I’ve not seen it so quiet in a long time. Where was everyone, were the offshore wrecks busy?
