After weeks of Easterlies and lumpy seas, on Wednesday May 1st we finally got an opportunity to dust off the cobwebs and give it a go. Myself, Albee and Ray took Grace off her moorings and headed North to fish some of our favourite marks around St Mary's. We reached our first mark just before bottom of the tide and within minutes we'd managed to land a few fresh run Cod. Our early success was followed by a very quiet hour or so before the tide turned when we once again started to pick up several Cod on each drift.
The small tide meant the drift was slow and there wasn't much wind but the water was gin clear and the flowing trace proved to be the best method when "hopped" a few turns from the bottom with the lure (shad or twintail) tipped off with bait. There was hardly a time when one of us wasn't playing a fish and I lost count of how many fish we landed and returned. We kept around half dozen each to top up our freezers and we returned probably double what we kept. It's fair to say that many of the fish were just legal keeping size or slightly under which bodes well for the future but we also hit areas during our drifts where the fish we landed were at least 3lb and above. I reckon the new season's definitely started but unfortunately the weather doesn't look too good for the coming days with the forecast predicting very strong Northerlies, let's hope the fish are still there after it settles down.
