  • First day out in a while

I've been hoping to have the chance to get up to the boat and check all's ok for the past 6 weeks, and finally I had a free Saturday to do it.

Apart from being generally grubby, everything had withstood the winter well, although there was quite some growth on the bottom. It was a nice morning with light NW winds, and with neap tides I could come and go over the marina sill at any time, so I took her out.

The water was far from clear, and with northerlies forecast for midday I scooted north while it was calm. I had a rod with me with various lures, a new jig and a few prawns.

It was a decent drift at Boulmer off the point, but elsewhere almost stationery. The seas built up when the wind veered and there was some light rain, but nothing like what was happening inland. I stuck it out for the afternoon, but there was not a single bite all day.

With the wind on my tail it was a fast ride back to Amble where I could give the boat a bit of a clean. I wasn't surprised that I'd had nowt. Looking back to my notes from last year at the same time I'd gone out on a neap tide with the same result. At least now there was less weed growth on the boat and I'd scratched my itch about getting out.

True to form, the wind flattened completely and it was a lovely evening at the marina. Let's hope for another good season ahead.

Good to see a report from you again , my mate and me off Newbiggin fished couple hours in the yaks , Jeff persevered drifting with baited hokeyes not a bite , I anchored in 4 different areas only 3 size codlings . Water was clearer further off around the wave buoy area . Disappointing fishing but great to be out on a gorgeous morning . Look forward to your future reports .

There's a lot to be said for just being out on the water on a nice sunny day.

Good to hear there are a few fish around too
