  • First blank of the year

Sunday 2nd Dec - the first time I was able to get out on the boat for 6 weeks, and it was a complete flop.

I had been wanting to get up to Amble to check lines/fenders/canopy etc as well as get a run out to clear some of the crud off the bottom, so the prospect of light winds and a small tide gave me the opportunity to do just that, and get a couple of hours in fishing at the same time.

Being so calm to start with, and with a forecast giving strong gusts later in the afternoon I thought I could try a few wrecks off Craster. The water was surprisingly clear - viz was about 5-6 feet down, and with a small drift of 0.7-0.8 knots I got my hopes up. But 4 wrecks later and not a bite.

I still had an hour of so left so tried the various marks on the hard ground around Boulmer, but there was nothing around.

Maybe I should have gone south. It's just one of those things, you have to make a quick decision about where to go cos there is no time to scoot around. At least I had put my mind to rest that the boat was tucked up safe and sound.

Just to mention - the seals are thriving - I counted more than a dozen on the short run up to Craster!

pity about the blank, but it's still nice to get out.

You almost made it to the end of the year without a blank. Well done for trying anyway.
I went to fill our boat with fuel on Sunday, to leave the tank brimmed over the winter. Once the rain passed the weather was good enough to encourage us down the river but not as far as the sea to fish.
One of the charter boats was unloading its passengers, they’d managed a few up to 8lb taken on big baits so there’s still some fish around down this way.
