  • Let sleeping seals lie

The weather was forcast to be good, and Magic Seaweed suggested the sea would be as flat as. However once out of the harbour there was a stiff breeze working to push you across a what was initially a lumpy sea.

Nevertheless I drifted with it and was quickly rewarded when my shad took a codling to about 2lb

Then the first of two undersize little tommy's

As a final play for decent cod I decided to drift close to the old pier wall as I made my way back

It worked a treat with two keepers coming on board

Turning the corner I noticed a large seal asleep on the harbour side of the old pier

Like a fool I moved closer for a better shot

However all this did was cause the brute to wake up, shuffle to the edge of its rock and launch.

Now I would love to show you a photo of the thing smelling my fish and following me in but suffice to say I was off!!
I can tell you I made it back unscathed and with three decent Cod.

    Happy days.

Funny enough Dale as I was paddling out of the harbour I heard people on the pier shouting 'look at the size of that seal'. I have no doubt it was the same one finally resting up as I came back in. The worry with seals is they are fearless, and if you have fish in the rear well on board a kayak which is only 4 inches above the water, they can come right up and try to get them.

Good post Trevor, 3 nice pan size codling. Your right about the seals, best give them a wide berth, they get very grumpy when disturbed.
