  • Amble Sunday 8th July - Now that's more like it!

7am out of Amble on Sunday with the tide just on it's way in. Conditions were flat calm and a little overcast. High expectations were met with the reality of a pretty slow start. We headed south to Hauxley and managed a couple of decent cod that went in the box.

We tried around the hard ground with shads and baited dalights for a couple of hours before deciding to head a little further south to Cresswell.

Around 9:30 we ditched the shads and went with daylights baited with Mackrel and began to hit a good run of fish - Cod, Pollock, Mackrel, masses of small Coalies and a single Pouting. This continued until we called it a day at full tide. Normally I've seen a slow down as the tide fills - not Sunday and we were into fish at almost every drop!

All in all we kept 14 nice Cod with an 8 lber being the biggest and 30 Mackrel - which were the first we've encountered this year. I'd say we must have returned twice that amount.

All in all a brilliant day with a haul to match. It feels like it's been a long time coming this year!

    Nice catch!

The couple who moor at Amble marina two berths up from me also went south on Sunday and they showed us some pretty decent fish they had caught down Cresswell way. They confirmed too that the mackerel were very much hit and miss, which is what I'd noticed as well. But when you do find 'em, they are meaty fish and taste so sweet at this time of year.

We had gone north on Sunday and did well too.

Big tides this coming weekend, but we'll give it a go on Saturday.
