  • A lovely day - 8th July 2018

And the fishing wasn't bad either!

Accompanied by my son, we set off from Amble an hour or so before high tide. It was a cloudy start, but soon warmed up and was gorgeous late on in the day.

We headed north, thinking there might not be much on the go with the smallish tides, but there were half-a-dozen other boats clustered around Boulmer, so we gave it a go. The water clarity was excellent - at least 10-12 feet. With the drift being a comfortable 0.5-0.8 knots, we had a steady stream of codling in the 1-3lb bracket until around 2 hours into the ebb, when everything slowed to a snails pace.

The lad fished shads and I used a mixture of frozen prawn, rag and small jelly eels. The bait got most fish, but the shads accounted for the better fish. We were mostly using light spinning rods and in the shallow water the fish gave a great account of themselves.

We mooched around a bit, even getting out the floats because the drift was almost nil, but around 3pm it got going again. I had a few Pollack, half-a-dozen coalies and the same number of mackerel, along with a further 15 codling, taking my total to over 30 codling for the day, all of which went back. My son caught a similar number. I didn't bother photographing the usual stuff, but when the cod in the photo turned up for him I thought it worth a shot. We didn't weigh it, but estimated it to be around 6lb.

It was just one of those very rare days when the weather was perfect, the sea was calm and glassy the entire day (none of the usual rock n roll!) and the fish played ball, in spite of the tide.

Chatting to others back at the marina, there were a fair few decent fish around, both north and south. It was also good to see you Graham, and good luck today with On Yer Marks.

It looked like it was one of those days where it is an absolute privilege to be out there. Well done on the catch.
