I took my son, Oli out for a session on Friday. We left the marina around 08.30 with the fog starting to clear. The first couple of drops around Hauxley produced nothing which didn't omen well.
Anyway, we motored down to Cresswell. It was supposed to be a small tide but the drift was decent and the water clarity actually good so we didn't bother anchoring. It wasn't long until we were into the first small codling of around 1-1/2 lbs. There were a steady number of such fish, some pushing the 2 lb mark, and with around a dozen coalies, taken just above the kelp and giving a decent scrap on light gear.
The flood brought on more fish, up to around 3-1/2 lb, with 4 possible keepers and a total tally for the day of around 35 codling, plus the coalies. Most of the codling ignored the squid, fresh mackerel and frozen runnydown and went for the frozen prawns. I reckon we would have done even better if we had come bettered prepared with shads as all the fish hit the baits on the move, but we'd left them all at home thinking we would be uptiding.
It was actually a lovely day once the fog had cleared and warm too, though by 3pm it was time to head in, with the sun setting. Exactly the reason why this year I didn't lift the boat in November as I usually do. Hoping for more calm conditions once Christmas has gone.
