Sapphire hooks huge porbeagle shark on sunday 4 november while fishing inshore wrecks it took a pout we had it at the side of the boat gaffed this 6ft shark we guessed it to be 250lb it was going berserk kicking hell out of the boat, I decided to let it go before it did damage to the boat, 10 anglers on board witnessed this all members of the sunderland scuba club,

Seems to me the releasing was an afterthought...snip the nylon and let it go. Unless your punters were fishing with 200 lb mono and wire traces?!

                Double standards

IUCN classifies the cod as "vulnerable endangered" just like the porbeagle!

I am sure almost everybody on this board has targeted, hooked, gaffed, killed, filleted, eaten hundreds of that endangered animal (I have and hopefully will again next week)

Whitby boats do specific Porbeagle specials.

I say, leave everybody be. A 200lb porbeagle is worth over 500£ on the market. Very few fiisherman will throw that back into the sea!

The law is unclear as well.

Personally I wouldn't want to catch or keep one, but each to their own.

I wonder if you don't check your facts, or just ignore them when it comes to anything to do with Peter? These sharks are not "endangered", but "vulnerable" and therefore legal to catch. In addition the shark caught by the Hartlepool fishermen was not "dead in there(sic) net."

                  The one that didn

A couple of lads on here go out tagging these sharks off our coast for DEFRA, i have had the kind invite to join them one time and really hope i get to see one close up.

In the last two years i have seen more marine life than i have in my previous 14 years boat fishing....species such as the white sided dolphin, common dolphin, porpoise, minke whale, sperm whale, pilot whale, Orka and what we think was that grey whale that was washed up dead in Harlepool, 8 days before.

I have even purchased a book and id chart

Richy when I worked for CalMac and sailed to the islands of the west coast I saw over the years, Dolphin, Porpoise, Pilot, Minke, Fin, Sperm, Humpback and Killer whales. Porbeagle and Basking sharks. Sounds impressive, but I sailed the islands for 17 years! Basking sharks seem to be making a comeback and plenty of Killer whales, Porpoises and Dolphins, numerous Minke and Pilot but the other whales were very rare.

I only ever take food for the table ,and put quite a few fish back ,but just dont see the point of gaffing this great creature,KAYOS whether it be peter or not ,just cant understand why on earth you would gaff this fish ,you would have to be very experienced to land it ,and yes its worth a lot of money, just a shame the lads could not reach a camera would have made some nice pictures
What makes a porbeagle "greater" than a cod, a herring, a lobster?

Shadman, honest question: Would you gaff a huge halibut? If yes, what makes it different to a porbeagle?
I reckon 100% of northsea boat anglers would gaff it and burst of pride.
Not long ago a skipper was celebrated for gaffing a halibut.
Atlantic halibuts are officially endangered in our waters!

i think it would be great to catch one.....but gaffing it and trying to get it on the boat ? no way..

                          not mine anyway...

the're not the most placid of species.. to have on the deck...

photo/video of the catch/ release, that would be good...

This one was caught off Whitby in 2006 from Seaspray and returned unharmed, some familiar faces in the pic too
