  • Wor Lass 4th Nov. An Unexpected Afternoon Out

Here’s a quick report of an unscheduled trip, since we’ve not had many posted recently.
It all happened by accident. I popped down to the marina today to do a few Sunday afternoon jobs, and on the way noticed that the sea was flat. I also noticed on the way that Billy’s fishing shop was open and still had bait left. A plan swung into action, which was handy as I’d forgotten to put the tools I needed to work on the boat into the car.

The marina was still frosty when I left at 12:30, T-shirt weather in the windless sunshine. I was out the marina and had a good run with the calm sea being ideal warm up the engine a bit; 17 knots and still with a couple of hundred revs spare. Wor Lass was flying. Just north of the pier, dolphin lazily surfaced a couple of times to say “get the camera” before disappearing.
First stop, Arthur’s wreck, it threw up a small scotchie, shortly followed by one twice as big and still under a pound. Fishing went down-hill after that with just mini-whiting from the hard ground inshore of StMary’s yellow can. Tides were very small and the drift was so slow there was no need to anchor. Humber coastguard interrupted my supernoodles to read the inshore forecast, gales imminent, from the north east, sounded at odds with the conditions.

As the sun went down on a good day to be at sea it was time to call it a day, perhaps even a season, what there was of it. Now we just need that NE gale to liven the beaches up and another weekend to get the odd-jobs done.

Yeh Kev1n, I thought I heard the fat lady singing the other week but I know how it is when you see the calm conditions, you just want to give it one more try.
