  • FFFsh at last!

With 1 of our 3 charters this week cancelled, another one abandoned, both due to the rubbish weather and our first one being an all too familiar story of Lynn and I looking like spectators as others caught, rather than players, it was time for a plan B.

So with a desperate last throw of the dice and today being our last day, we decided to tackle the 100 mile round trip to Whitby, if we could find a boat with 2 places. After a phone around yesterday afternoon we got booked for a day of uptiding. Now we have never done this type of fishing before so we took to the forums to get some advice. Read some good stuff and spent time in the caravan rigging accordingly.

Set the alarm for stupid o'clock and we were on the road by 5am. Decent drive down and visited the tackle shop for black lug and mussels to augment our squid and mackerel, plus 6oz grippers. Next cooked breakfast at the nearby cafe, then down to the dock to board the boat.

Looked calm and clear as we sailed out of the harbour.

Motored down to Sandsend I believe and anchored up with another boat having the same plan.

Baiting up was a bit of an embarrassment at first, trying to get the hang of big bait cocktails and bait elastic, most of the first few ended up on the deck and worse still, I stood on one of the crab cart sausages Codfather145 kindly gave us.....bit of a mess

Baits that went out looked a bit ragged, but we got them in the water. After a short while we started getting bites, but could not hook up with the fish. This uptide malarky is a bit tricky! Let bite develop.....missed it, strike straight away.........missed it! Very frustrating. After a couple of hours and more missed bites, the rod dipped, I struck and seemed to be snagged, but it was just the lead in the seabed and when it freed I had a fish on. This nice Ling was soon in the box

    First keeper of the week

Unfortunately the missed bite nonsense continued and Lynn got really fed up.

The action picked up in the afternoon as we finally managed to hook the fish that were biting and we got 3 Cod each plus a couple of the biggest Pouting we have ever seen. For some reason with photobucket upgrading it's site, some pictures seem to upload, then disappear Oh well you have seen photos of Cod to 5lb plenty of times before). Lynn was now happier, even though I had 2 Ling more than her!

All too soon the day was over, but we were really satisfied.............fish and a calm sunny day. A few photos on the way in that survived the uploading process.

So we need more uptiding practice, but all in all a good day.

Phoning home to brag about what she caught. Comments on the new hat please
