Over the years I've done a bit uptiding off whitley, but mainly on the rough ground inside the yellow can area, but that's when the tides have been very strong and found up tiding was the best way to keep your lead on the bottom. Still best to use a grip lead, (breakaway) even though it's heavy ground. We would loose a few leads but the rewards compensated.
When a fish takes the bait signaled by the rod straightening out, don't bother striking, just reel fast to take up the slack, you may think you've missed the fish, but keep on reeling to catch it up by which time the fish will be at the back of the boat, or even down tide.
If you have a good anchor for sand/mud, then go a little further off past the hard ground, locate a wreck, there are a few in less than 100ft of water and fish near it. You will need to cast further up tide than in shallow water, but as the tide slackens, I feel this is the time the fish move a little further from the wreck, so increasing your chances other than just fishing on soft featureless ground .
Good luck, let us know how you got on.
